WVILLIAM O. EWINGER, OF BURLINGTON, IOWVA.
WATER- HEATER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 466,006, dated December 29, 1891. Application filed March 12, 1821. Serial No. 384,813. (No model.)
device of this class which shall be simple in construction and in which a heating-surface of considerable extent shall be provided; and it consists in an improved construction, arrangement, and combination of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings hereto annexed, Figure 1 is a perspective View of a water-heating apparatus constructed in accordance with my invention, the casing having been removed so as to expose the interior construction. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional View of the same. Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse sectional view taken on the line 3 3 in Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a horizontal sectional View taken on the line 4 4 of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a detail view showing the method of connecting the vertical pipes with the upper casing.
Like numerals of reference indicate like parts in all the figures of the drawings.
My improved water-heating apparatus is provided with an upper and a lower casing, designated, respectively, by 1 and 2. Each of said casings is composed of a suitably shaped box having a flange extending downwardly from the upper casing and upwardly from the lower casing, as shown, respectively, at 3 and 4, so as to form the annular waterspaces 5 and 6. The upper and lower casings are connected by means of vertical pipes 7, to the ends of which are attached right and left hand threaded elbows 8, which in turn are connected by means of short right and left hand threaded pipe-sections 9 with the inner sides 3 and 4 of the said casings, thus connecting the water-spaces of the latter. The said pipes are arranged around the sides of the heater, the front being left open in order that fuel may be conveniently supplied. The space between the upper and lower cases is walled up with brick-work; or a suitable metallic casing may be provided, if preferred.
any convenient manner.
Suitably attached to or connected with the under side of the upper casing 1 are a series of depending pipes 10, the lower ends of which are connected in pairs by means of the return-bends 11. The latter are provided on their under sides with suitable plugs 12,which may be conveniently removed when it shall be desired to draw the water from the said pipes.
The casing is provided about midway of its height with the inwardly-extending flange 13, which extends as far as the pipes 7. This flange, when the casing is constructed of brick-work, may be formed of one of the courses of bricks, which may be extended as shown. It is obvious, however, that the said flange may be constructed of any other suitable material, and that it may be arranged in This flange is to form a deflector to throw the products of combustion in an inward direction as well as the air rising between the lower ends of the said pipes 7, thus insuring the complete combustion of the fuel as well as the consumption of the smoke.
The lowercasin g2 is mounted upon the ashpit 14, which is provided at the front with the door 15. Suitable doors, as 16 and 17, are also provided to afford access to the interior of the heater-casing.
The grate, which is designated by 18, is suitably mounted within the lower casing 2 of the heater. .It will be observed that the area of the grate is materially increased by the lower pipe-sections 9, which connect the lower ends of the pipes 7 with the casing 2. Said pipe-sections may serve to supporta considerable portion of the fuel, air in sufficient quantities to support combustion being admitted in an upward direction between the said pipe-sections. V
Suitable pipes are to be provided for the admission and exit of water, as will be'readlly understood.
As will be seen from the foregoing description, the water within the casing may circulate freely through the several pipes, and a very considerable surface is exposed to the heat of the burning fuel, thus causing the water to be heated very quickly and effectively.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- 1. In a water-heating apparatus, the combination, with the upper and lower casings having annular water-spaces, of the Vertical connecting pipes having their upper and lower ends connected with the inner sides of said annular water-spaces, substantially as set forth.
2. In a water-heating apparatus, the combination, with the upper and lower casings having annular water-spaces, of the vertical connecting pipes, the right and left hand threaded elbows at the ends of said pipes, and the right and left hand threaded pipe-sections connecting said elbows with the inner sides of the annular water-spaces, the lower pipesections serving partly as an extension of the grate which is mounted within the lower casing, substantially as and for the purpose set forth. A
3. In a water-heating apparatus, the combination of the upper and lower casings, the vertical connecting-pipes, and the pipes depending from the upper casin g and connected in pairs at their lower ends by return-bends having suitable drain-plugs,substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
4. In a water-heating apparatus, the combination of the upper and lower casings having annular water-spaces, the vertical pipes connected with the inner sides of said waterspaces, the pipes depending from the upper casing and connected in pairs by returnben'ds at their lower ends, the grate arranged within the lower casing, the ash-pit supporting the lower casing and having a suitable door, and the wall or casing having an inwardly-extending flange or deflector and provided with suitable doors, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimonythat I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto afiixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM O. EWINGER.
