Description

Patented Deo. 22, 1891.
/N VENTO/ A TTOHNE YS (No Model.)
J. W. HURST. COMBINED HOE, PICK, AND SHOVEL.
UNITED STATES JAMES IV. I'IURS'I, OF
PATENT OFFICE.
HoToHKIss, COLORADO.
COMBINE-D HOE, PICK, AND SHOVEL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 465,763, dated December 22, 1891.
Application led February 9, 1891.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES W. HURST, of Hotchkiss, in the county of Delta and State of p Colorado, have invented a new and useful Improvement in a Combined Hoe, Pick, and
Shovel, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved agricultural implement combining in a single device a hoe, pick, and shovel; and it is the object of my invention to so construct and combine the parts that they can be conveniently and compactly arranged, quickly and easily changed from one implement to another, and
when so changed the devices not in use will not interfere with the use of the other device. lVith these objects in view my invention consists in the peculiar construction of the various elements and their novel combination or arrangement, as will be more fully hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings forming a part 4of this specification, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved device arranged for use as a shovel. Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view of same. Fig. 3 is a side View of the device ready for use as a hoe or pick. Fig. l is a perspective view of the same.
In carrying out my invention I employa ferrule or holder A, which receives the handle II in its upper end, its low er end being bifurcated,as clearly shown, and between the outer ends of the members ce is pivoted the tang B of a shovel C, said tang extending a considerable distance beyond the pivotal point, and at its free end is provided with a pick-pointb.
Thetang B, constituting the pick implement of my device, is of such length and thickness that it can be folded within the bifurcated portion of the ferrule or holder when the blade is to be used as a shovel, and in order to secure the said tang Within the ferrule and hold the blade rigid I employ a laterallyswinging arm I), pivoted to the under or rear side of the ferrule, above the bfurcated portion, which arm is adapted to be swungaround in alignment with the slotted portion, which it covers, thus holding the tang therein. In swinging to its place over the slotted portion the arm D passes over one Vof the members d, and upon the other member is arranged a lug or stop d', which limits the lateral movement Serial No. 380.868. (No model.)
therein to receive the lug a.
The free end of the arm D is beveled, as at d', and the ends of the members@ are formed with undercut shoulders CL2, beneath which of the arm, said arm having' a notch (Z cut the beveled end slides, and in the upper or ing in holding the parts secure when at an.
angle to the ferrule. In order to lock the arm in place when the implement is used either as a shovel or pick, I provide a locking-boltE, arranged upon the outer face of the arm, said bolt working through lug e, produced upon the arm, the handle e of said bolt being secured to the inner or rear end of the bolt, said handle being slotted longitudinally at e2, through which is passed a screw e3, by means of which the handle is secured to the arm and allowed to slide back and forth, working the bolt, said handle having a looped portion e4, affording a finger-hold. A longitudinal lug F is produced upon the rear or under side of the tang, said lug having its end cut away or recessed to receive the end of the arm when the device is used as a shovel, and the portion of the lug which overlaps the end of the arm has an aperture f produced therein, which is adapted to receive the bolt and lock the arm and tang securely in position. A similar aperturef is produced in the upper or forward side of the tang just above the notch b', which bore receives the bolt when the parts are arranged t'or hoeing or picking.A
From the above it will be seen that I provide an implement combining in one device IOO jecting longitudinally from the tread of the same and pointed at its free end, of a bifurcated holder, the tang being pivoted between the members of the same,a latelzilly-swinginp` arm pivoted to the holder, and a locking device carried upon the said erm and adapted ro-engage the tang and lock the saine upon either side, substantially as shown and described.
2. -In a combined hoe, pick, and shovel, ihe combination, with e ferrule bifurcated at its lower end and provided with a stop and undercut shoulders, cfa blade having ai projecting tang pivoted between the .members and having recesses produced in its opposite sides, and the laterally-swinging arno having a beveled end adapted to enter the recesses in the tang and slide beneath the undercut shoulders7 substantially as shown anddescribed.
3. The combination, with thebifurcated ferrule, of the blade, the tang having a. recess on one side and a recessed projection on the other and apertures formed, also, upon the opposite sides, the laterallyswinging armvpivoted to the ferrule, adapted to engage the recesses in the sides of the tang, and the lockingbolt carried by the swinging arm and adapted to engage the apertures in the tang, substantially as shown and described.
