PIPE TONGS.
No. 465,558. Patented 1390.22, 1891.

- UNTTED STATES PATENT OEETCE.
lVILLIAM DITTRICK, OF ERIE, PENNSYLVANIA.
PlPE-TONGS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 465,558, dated December 22, 1891.
Application filed July 3, 1891. Serial No. 398,354. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be itknown that 1, WILLIAM DITTRIOK, a citizen of Canada, residing at Erie, in the county of Erie and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pipe-Tongs; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to pipe-tongs; and it consists in certain improvements in the construction thereof, as will be hereinafter set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings as follows:
Figure 1 is a side View of pipe-tongs made in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional View taken on the line X X in Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrow, with the fixed jaw removed from the part B, the scale being enlarged.
A marks the handle; A, the fixed jaw, which is integral. with the handle A; B B, the movable jaw; O, the serrated plates carried by the movable jaw; D, the sliding adjustingblock; E, the link connecting the adjustingblock with the movable jaw; G, the adjusting thumb-nut; F, a spring which holds the serrated plates in place and the jaws extended, and a the screw-thread on thuinbnut.
Other letters of reference shown in the drawings will be referred to in proper place in the following description.
The handle A is a straight bar of metal, having a square part (t with a screw-thread a cut thereon, and at its outer end it is formed into a fixed jaw A, which is wider than the parts back of it, thus forming a shoulder a. The movable jaw consists of a hooded part B, which surrounds the handle A just back of the fixed jaw A, and bears with its faces Z) against the shoulders a and of a jaw part proper B, which has a longitudinal recess 19 which receives the serrated plates 0. These serrated plates are two in number and have their serrated faces beveled inwardly, so that the serrated face of the jaw is slightly indented or V-formed, as seen at c in Fig. 2.
The backs of these jaw-plates O are notched, as at 0 (shown by dotted lines in Fig. 1,) and engage with a cross-rib b in the bottom of the recess b in the jaw B. This engagement of the notches c with the rib Z1 keeps the plates 0 from sliding out at the end of the recess, and a spring F, which bears against the plates C near their inner corners, holds the plates flexibly in the recess and also keeps the jaws apart.
On the handle A is a sliding block or clip, which is moved bya thumb-nut G, which runs on the screw-thread a. This block or clip is connected with the movable jaw B B by a link E, which is pivoted at the points I) and d to the jaw and block, respectively.
By running the thumb-nut G one way or the other the jaw B B will be moved from or toward the fixed jaw. By this means the tongs are adjusted to pipes of different diameter. As seen in Fig. 1, the movable jaw is at its widest extension, and by running the nut G toward the jaws the jaw part B will be moved toward the jaw-A, the part B swinging back away from the shoulder a.
What I claim as new is 1. In pipe tongs, the combination, with the part A A, forming the handle and the fixed jaw, of a movable jaw loosely yoked over and movable longitudinally upon said handle, a sliding clip or block on the handle, a link connecting the movable jaw and the clip,
and means for adjusting the clip at different points on the handle.
2. In pipe-tongs, the combination, with the part A A, forming the handle and the fixed jaw and having the screw-thread a. thereon, of a movable jaw embracing said handle by its hooded part B and pivotally movable thereon, a clip embracing said handle and longitudinally movable thereon, a link connecting said clip with said movable jaw, and a thumbnut for moving said clip.
In pipe-tongs, the combination, with the part A A, forming the handle and the fixed jaw, of the movable jaw B B, embracing said handle by its hood B and pivotally movable on said handle, the serrated jaw-plates O C, recessed in said movable jaw and held against longitudinal movement by the notches c i In testimony whereoflaflix my signature in engaging with the rib b the spring F, bearpresence of two witnesses. ing against the inner ends of said plates, a
sliding clip on said handle, connected with VILLIAM DITTRIOK' 5 the movable jaw by a link, and means for, Witnesses:
adjusting said clip at difierent points on said J N0. K. HALLOCK,
handle. WM. P. HAYES.
