(No Model.')
0. T. SEGAR. FOLDING CHAIR.
No. 465,500. Patented Dec. 22,1891.
UNITED STATES PATENT. OFFICE.
CHARLES T. SEGAR, OF KENOSHA, \VISCONSIN.
FOLDING CHAIR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 465,500, dated December 22, 1891. Application filed August 10, 1891. Serial No. 402,244.. (No model.)
T0 at whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES T. SEGAR, of
Kenosha, inthe county of Kenosha and State.
composed of a straight frame, folding legs, a
folding seat, and a folding back, the object being to so connect and support the foldi ng legs, seat, and back upon such frame as to cause them to lie compactly within the compass of the frame when folded and to assume when extended the proper relative inclinations to the frame to make the same stand upon the floor with the back at the proper angle relatively to the seat to support the occupant in an easy post nre. This object I have attained in such chair, having its parts arranged and connected as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of the chair folded. Fig. 2 is a side or edge elevation showing the chair folded, and Fig. 3 isaside or edge elevation'showing the same extended ready for use.
In the drawings, A designates the frame, made of two plain straight side pieces secured together at the top by a cross-piece a and below the middle by a rung a.
B designates the folding legs, which are pivotedupon the rung a, so as to turn thereon, and connected near the top and bottom by rungs b.
O is a seat, Which is composed of the outer pieces 0, secured together at the corners, so as side is provided with a metallic piece e, secured by rivets and curved upward, as shown at 6 Fig. 3. To these upwardly-curved parts of said metallic pieces the lower end of the back is pivotally secured by means of a rivet a one on each side.
The seat is connected with the frame by a link 0 on each side, pivoted at one end to the edge of the seat by a rivet and at the other end to the frame, the pivotal points on the frame being located near the front edge of the side pieces, as at 0 at the edge opposite to that having the connection e of the back with the said frame. By this arrangement and these connections the 'seat is caused to fold upon the back and to lie within the compass of the front part of the frame, while the back is caused to swing in atthe bottom and occupy a corresponding place in the rear part of the frame. The seat is connected, also, with the folding legs by means of rods E, which are pivoted at one end to the seatand at the other end to the upper end of the legs, there being recesses c in the under side of the adjacent piece 0 for said rods to fit into when the seat is folded, so that they will not then project outside the plane of the frame.
When folded, the back and seat lie folded together within the upper part of the frame and the legs turn into the lower part of the same, thus making the legs, seat, and back when folded lie wholly within the compass of the straight frame.
When pulling down the seat in unfolding the chair for use,'the links 0 automatically throw the lower edge of the back out and the rods E throw thelegs forward, thereby bringing the back into the proper angle with the seat and the legs into their working position.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, with the frame, ofaback pivot-ed at its top between the side rails of said frame, a seat pivoted to the lower edge of said back, a link on each side pivoted at one end to the rear of said seat and atthe ot-her endto the side rails of said frame, legs pivoted to the rung of said frame, and a rod on each side pivoted at one end to the upper end of said legs and at the other to said seat, said back, seat, legs, links, and'rods being adapted to fold and lie within the compass of said frame and to be extended, as specified.
CHARLES T. SEGAR.
I Witnesses:
