THoMAs oAULEIELD, or BAXTER, IowA.
HAM E-TUG.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 465,040, dated December 15, 1891.
Application filed April 27,1891. Serial No. 390,722. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom, t may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS CAULFIELD, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Baxter, in the county of Jasper and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Extensible llame-Tug, of which the following is a specification.
My object is to provide a jointed haine-tug that can be lengthened and shortened and als'o adapted for adjustably and detachably connecting a trace therewith, and to provide two ways of lengthening` a combined hametug and trace and fitting aharness to a horse; and my invention consists in the construction and combination of a rigid metal hanne-tug section having tongues and loops, a hinged tug-section adapted to be connected with a haine, and a lexible leather section adapted to be detachably and adjustably connected with the Inetal frame and providedwith a buckle at its end adapted fordetachably and adjustably connecting a trace therewith, as hereinafter set forth, pointed out in the claim, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a plan view of the metal frame. Fig. 2 is avertical longitudinal sectional view showing the strap and trace in their most extended position, and Fig. 3 is a perspective view showing the diiterent parts combined as required for practical use and the strap and trace adjusted to their shortest length.
A is the frame of the device, preferably cast complete in one piece. It has on its inside and bot-tom integral tongues or pins A2 at regularintervals, adapted to enter correspond ing perforations in a leather tug section Vadapted to be admitted in the frame A and to be adjusted on the pins A2. At the forward end of the frame A and formed integral therewith are parallel forward projections or arms B, having an intersecting crossbar B2 Xed thereto, to which a strap can be attached. At its top are loops B3 and openings between thern adapted to admit a persons ingers and to facilitate the adjustment of the tug-section and trace therein.
C represents a leather llame-tug section adapted to be detachably and adj ustably connected with the metal section A.
C2 is a section hinged to the cross-bar B2 of the frame A. A Inetal hook or loop G3, of common form and adapted to be attached to the hames of a harness, is xed to its front en'd by means of rivets. The leather section C is adapted to enter the frame A and to be adj ustably connected thereto by means of perforations 1 2 3 at regular intervals along its center, that will admit the tongues A2. To the other end of the section C is attached the loop of a two-part buckle of common form, as required, to adjustably connect it with the trace of a harness.
F is a harness-trace adapted in size to enter the frame A, to extend under the loops,
and to overlap the section C, as required, to hold the section C securely within the metal section A. The trace is adj ustably connected with the rear end ofthe section C by means of a two-part buckle of common form.
H is a leather guard adapted to protect a draft-animal from the chating or rubbing of the metal frame A. It is connected thereto by rivets passing through the bottom of the frame and by leather straps H2, which cover the loops of the frame A.
l claim as my invention- The combination of the frame A, having tongues A2, a cross-bar B2, and loops B2, arched over the tongues, a leather-section C, having a buckle at its rear end and perforations along its center to admit the tongues A2, a tug-sec tion C2, adapted to be connected with a hame and hinged to the cross-bar B, substantially as shown ,and described, for the purposes stated. I
THOMAS CAULFIELD.
