INKSTAND.
Patented Dec. 8', 1891.
WWESSESJ UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHRISTIAN AIIBERT SIGELEN, OF NEV BRIGHTON, PENNSYLVANIA.
INKSTAND.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 464,831, dated December 8, 1891.
Application iiled August 29, 1891. Serial No. 404,154. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, CHEIsTIAN ALBERT SIGELEN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New Brighton, in the county of Beaver and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Inkstands; and I do hereby declare that the fol-lowing is a full, clear, and exact de scription of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in inkstands, the object being to provide an article of this description which shall possess superior advantages with respect to economy, simplicity, and efficiency.
The invention consists in the novel ccnstruction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a sectional View of an inkstand constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the funnel detached.
In the said drawings the reference-numeral l designates the ink-reservoir, which may be made of any suitable material, provided with an upwardly-projecting annular iiange 2, which may be screw-threaded peripherally to engage with corresponding threads in the cap or cover 3, which is provided with a central aperture 4 to receive the mouth of the funnel. The funnel 5 consists of the mouth 6 and spout 7v and is made of wood coated or covered with a suitable enamel which will not be affected by the acids or other ingredients in the ink. At the lower end the funnel-mouth is provided with an annular Iiange 8 and a peripheral groove 8, with which engages a concave-convex elastic disk or valve 9. The
outer edge of this disk rests loosely upon the flange 2, so that it is free to rise and fall Vto a limited extent, its movement being limited by the cap 3.
The operation will be readily understood. To fill the reservoir it is only necessary to raise the funnel a short distance, so as to lift the disk or valve off its seat, when the ink can be poured slowly into the funnel-mouth, from whence it will escape to the reservoir, the air therein being expelled through the cap or cover. Then the reservoir is filled, the funnel is dropped, the disk or valve being seated in the flange 2. By depressing the funnel and concavo-convex disk the ink is forced up into the funnel-mouth.
By the above construction, if the inkstand is exposed to heat, the ink is not forced out through the funnel by the expansion of the air, as in the ordinary inkstand of this description, but the valve or disk is raised from its seat suiiiciently to allow the expanded air to escape, thus preventing any overflow of the ink.
A positive supply of the ink can always be depended upon each time the funnel is depressed, and by returning to its proper position the action of the valve or disk insures a new supply of air.
By having the disk rest loosely upon its seat and uncontined at its edge it may 'be made of inferior material and last much longer than the disks or valves which are connected or secured to the inkstand as ordinarily constructed.
I make the funnel of wood on account of its cheapness and durability and coat it with enamel to protect it from the injurious action of the ink.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- The combination, with an inkstand, `of a funnel having a mouth and a spout made of wood coated with a suitable enamel and provided with an annular ange and a peripheral groove and a concave-convex valve or disk, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto afiixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHRISTIAN ALBERT SIGELEN.
