AUGUST A. OTTO, OF LINCOLN, NEBRASKA.
CUE-CHALKER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 464,288, dated December l, 1891.
Application led February 16, 1891. Serial No. 381,676. (No model.) l
To @ZZ whom it may concern,.-
Be it known that I, AUGUST A. OTTO, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Lincoln, in the county of Lancaster, and in the State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cue-Chalkers; and I d0 hereby declare that the followin g is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention consists in certain peculiarities of construction and combination of parts, to be hereinafter described with reference to the accompanying drawings and subsequently claimed.
In the drawings, Figure l represents an elevation of my device, partly in section; and Figs. 2, 3, and Ll, horizontal sections, respectively taken on lines 2 2, 3 3,`and 4f 4 of Fig. l.
Referring by letter to the drawings, A represents a horizontal bracket for attachment` to a wall or other suitable support. Parallel arms B O of the bracket have registeringopenings b c therein, and, as shown, the opening in the arm B is round While that in the other arm C is square, although both of said openings may be square, if found more desirable. A vertically-disposed and spirallygrooved rod D engages the openings in the bracket-arms B C, and the upper end of this rod is preferably provided with a weight E in order to insure its automatic descent after being pushed up from below. The lower end of the rod D is shown as provided with a horizontal plate E, having depending spring-eX- tensions G, arranged to form the four sides of a square and clamp a block I-I of cue-chalk, as shown in Fig. l; but any other suitable means may be employed to secure the chalk to said rod.
By placing the tip of a cue against the chalk 4o and pushing upward the spirally-groovedrod D is causedto ascend with a rotary movement, and thus a certain amount of said chalk is rubbed onto said tip. The cue being withdrawn, the rod D descends by its Own gravity to its normal position.
By the employment of a device such as I have described cue-tips may be quickly and evenly chalked Without bringing the chalking material into contactwith the hands of 5o the operator, and at the same time said material is kept away from the tables on which billiards, pool, and analogous games are played, whereby the marking of such' tables and crushing of chalk ou the floor is avoided. At the same time l do away with the employment of springs for the purpose of returning the chalk-carrying rod to its normal position.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Let- 6o ters Patent, is-
The combination of a bracket having two parallel horizontal arms, each of which is provided with an opening in register with the one in the opposing arm and at least one of these openings being square, a spirallygrooved vertical rod engaging the openings, p a Weight-head on the rod, and a block ot' chalk secured to the lower end' of said rod, substantially as set forth. i
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand, at Lincoln, in the county of Lancaster and State of Nebraska, in the presence of two witnesses.
AUGUST A. OTTO.
