SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 373,016, dated November 8, 1887,

My invention consists of a billiard-table pocket formed of pendent flaps, the same being employed in lieu of the well known pocket, as will be hereinafter fully set forth.

It also consists of means for throwing the flaps out of service when so required.

Referring to the drawings, A represents a portion of a billiard-table, and B the rail thereof.

To the rail B, at the corners and sides of the table, at places where the pockets of the table are to belocated, there are secured brackets O, to each of which is pivoted a frame, D, the latter having secured to it a piece of Wire or metal, E, forming a support for flaps F, which depend from said piece and are constructed of any suitably light and durable material.

Secured to the brackets G, and bearing against the frames D, are springs G, which serve to keep said frames firmly in their lowermost posit-ions.

It will be seen that each support E projects from the rail B in such manner as to leave a a space H between the said parts, and the flaps F close the front and sides of said space, whereby a pocket is formed, the flaps swinging freely on the support E as an axis, so as to yield when struck by a ball and permit the latter to enter the pocket.

In order to limit the swinging motions of the flaps, their axial portions F, which are of the form of eyes, are slotted, as at J, and into the slots project pins K, which are secured to the support E, so that as the flaps are struck the walls of the slots J engage with the pins K, and thus prevent extreme motions of said flaps or overturning of the same.

The pockets H are shown sufficiently large to receive at least two billiard-balls.

When the flaps are in position shown inall of the figures excepting Fig. 3, the .billiardballs may enter the pocket, it being evident that when a ball strikes the flaps the latter rise inwardly and permit the ball to pass under the same and thus roll into the pocket, the flaps then falling, and owing to the pins K and slots. J being held against outward motions the escape of the ball is prevented. When either of the balls that have been pocketed is to be played from position in the pocket, the pocket is thrown up or out of service and rested on the rail B, as will be seen in Fig. 3, whereby the pocket does not obstruct the ball or cue.

The brackets C are formed or provided with recesses L, which constitute chalk-holders, all or only a number of said brackets being thus provided. The pockets are readily serviceable for pool-playing, as is evident, and may be attached to carom-tables when so desired.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. A billiard-table pocket having a bracket with frame pivoted thereto, and a spring secured to said bracket and adapted to hold said frame in its lowermost position, a support attached to the frame, and flaps pending from said frame, all of said parts being combined, substantially as described.

2. A billiard-table pocket consisting of the bracket 0, the frame D, pivoted to said bracket 0, the spring G, secured at one end to bracket 0, and having the other end bearing against the frame D, as described, the support E, having pins K, and the slotted flaps F, all substantially as described.

3.
