THOMAS J. FORD AND PHILO B. WATERS, OF GENEVA, OHIO.
BARREIL swmc -AND SUPPORT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 367,802, dated August 9, 1887.
Application filed May 2, IBM.
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that we, THOMAS J. FORD and Piano B. WATERs, of Geneva, in the county of Asht-abula and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Barrel Swings and Supporting Apparatus; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and complete description thereof.
The nature of our invention relates to an improved swing and supporting'mechanism for the withdrawal and'replacing of barrels having goods therein from under the counters of stores and shops.
It is the practice in shops and stores to place the filled barrels under the counter, and for obtaining access to their contents either removing or tipping them or reaching below the counter. The purpose of said invention is to cause the barrel to be moved with ease and facility in handling, thereby avoiding the labor and delay in moving about the barrels in the common way of business.
That the said invention may be more fully seen and understood, the following specification and annexed drawings are referred to.
Figure 1 represents a vertical section of the said barrel swing and supporting mechanism.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same as seenfrom the line we.
Like letters of reference refer to like parts in both views.
In the drawings, A, Fig. 1', represents the top ofa shop-counter, and B the floorline of the place in which it is used.
In Figs. 1 and 2, G is a base-plate secured to the floor. From said plate project bosses a b for the support of the studs or posts 0 d, to which is fitted the cross-head D. In said head is an opening to receive. the rod E, which is preferably square,to prevent its turning within the head. The upper end of the rod E is inserted in a mortise in the top plate, F, when the rod is adjusted in the cross-head D to the proper height to be in connection with the plate F, as seen at f, Fig. 1. This plateis supposed to be fastened under the counter in line with the base-plate when the apparatus is used.
The cross-head is provided with a set-screw, S, or its equivalent, to fasten the rod to the cross-head in the various heights required for its adjustmentunder different counters and Serial No. 236,80. (No model.)
varioussized barrels to be attached thereto. The top plate, F, being fastened to the under side of the counter, as seen in Fig. 1, with the rod E, forms, in connection with the crosshead D, an attachment to the studs 0 din their relations with the base-plate C. By this arrangement the mechanism is secured in position.
, To each of the studs 0 d is hinged'a swinghook, H H, to which the barrels J 'K are respectively connected at the lower ends or chines, as seen in Fig. 1. The upper ends of the barrels are held by the swing-hooks G G to the hooks ion the movable bracket I. The hooks G G form a hinge-connection with the bracket I similar to the arrangement of the hooks H H and the studs 0 d,which admitsof the barrels being swung out from and in under the counter readily and with little personal force.
The adjustment of the position and heights of the hooks 13, in connection with the movable bracket I,are arranged by sliding up and down on the rod, and the relative arrangement of the hooks H H G G therewith admits of barrels of various sizes and lengths being hung to the described mechanism, as shown in Fig. 1, whereby the barrels may be turned or swung on the hinged supports, as indicated by the dotted line 9, Fig. 2, for the purpose before stated.
The movable bracket I is quired position on the rod E by means of a set-screw, L, Fig. 2, or its equivalent. The said rod is fastened to the cross-head D also by similar means, so that the rod with the top plate, F, and base-plate O are easily adjusted to various heights of counters and other similar positions.
Fig. 2, respectively, by which means the bar rels may be covered and uncovered for protection and handling the contents thereof. The arrow at indicates the direction in which the barrel is turned, and the arrow at that of the cover N, hinged, as before shown. The two barrels with their covers are hung, moved, orturned essentially in the sameway by the described mechanism.
For the purpose of preventing insects from entering the barrels the top plate and basefastened in the rea To the hooks G G are connected lugs MM,
A plate are channeled or cupped out, as indicated at h Z, in which channels or cups is placed tar or other material to arrest the passage of insects to the barrels.
As a modification of the described apparatus, two rods in place of the rod E may be used for the same purpose as though the studs 0 (I were extended up under the counter and connected with the top plate, F, and to the haseplate with movable hooks hinged on the rods for supporting: and swinging the barrels,
plate G, cross-head'D, rod E, connected with the plate F and adjustable in the cross-head, and hooks H H G G, hinged, respectively, on said studs and on the movable bracket I, in combi nation with one or more barrel-covers hinged relatively to the hooks G G, arranged sub stantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
2. As a means for supporting and swinging barrels under counters, the combination of a base-plate fastened to the floor and provided with studs attached to a cross-head for supporting the lower end of a guide-rod, E, connected with a top plate under the counter,
hinged hooks on said studs for supporting the bottom of the barrel, and hooks holding the top thereof hinged to an adjustable bracket on the rod E, whereby one or two barrels are hinged and suspended between the upper and lower hooks, arranged substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whcreofwe affix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
