FENDER FOR PLOWS;
No; 464,102. I Patente'dDe-ctl, 1891,
UNiTnn STATES PATENT OFFI E.
DRUSILLA C. MQCONNELL, OF VVILLIAMSTON, SOUTH CAROLINA.
FENDER FOR PLOWS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No..464,102, dated December 1, 1891.
Application filed March 7, 1891. Serial No. 384,082. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DRUSILLA O. McCon- NELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Williamston, in the county of Anderson and State of South Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fenders for Flows; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in fenders for plows; and it has for its object to generally improve upon the construction and render more efficient in operation this class of appliances.
The invention has for its more immediate object to provide a fender which may be quickly and readily attached to any of the various forms of plows, and which may be so adjusted as to render its use equally effective with plants of any height, the adjusting features being such as to render it possible to so adjust the fender as to nicely regulate the quantity of earth that is deposited along the row of plants.
To these ends and to such others as the invention may pertain the same consists in the peculiar construction and in the novel combination, arrangement and adaptation of parts, all as more fully hereinafter described, shown in the accompanying drawings, and then specifically defined in the appended claims.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the let ters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification, like letters of reference indicating like parts throughout the several views, and in which drawings- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a plow provided with a fender constructed and at-.
tached in accordance with my' invention. Fig. 2 is a perspective view upon an enlarged scale of the fender detached from the plow. Fig. 3 is a like view of the supplemental fender.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings byletter, A designates the beam of the plow, which is of ordinary construction and is provided with handles B and with plow O.
E is a strip of heavy sheet metai, provided .55 at one of its ends with an arm or extension E at right angles to the body portion of the strip. This extension E is provided with a slot F, and at a point adjacent to the extension E the strip E is bent at right angles, as shown at E The strip E is at its rear end curved upwardly, as shown at E bent at right angles to the body of the strip, as shown at G, and again bent upwardly at right angles to the portion G, as shown at H, said portion H be ing provided with a vertical slot H.
The strip or fender E is attached at its forward end to the side face of the plow-beam by means of a bolt I passed through the slot F, and at its rear end by means of a bolt J, which is passed through the slot H. It will be observed that the bolt J is passed through the plow-beam, and that it extends fora con siderable distance beyond the outer face of the same, this extended portion of the bolt being screw-threaded, as shown, and that-upon each side of the portion H of the fender a setnut K is provided, so that by adjusting these nuts the fender may be adusted at any desired distance from the face of the plow-beam, and it will also be seen that each end of the fender maybe adjusted either up or down, as desired.
L is a supplemental strip of sheet metal, which is provided at its ends with extensions or arms L, provided with angular-slots L This supplemental strip L is attached to the outer face of the strip or fender Eby means of bolts L passed therethrough.
The operation of the device will be readily o understood. The form of the fender is such as to adapt itto protect the growing plants and at the same time permit the plow to pass in close proximity to the row. The fender may be readily adjusted, so as to raise or lower 9 5 either end, and thus regulate the throw of the furrow, so as to permit the desired quantity of earth to be deposited next to the plants in the row. The supplemental part L, it will be observed, may be adj ustedrso as to entirely prevent the earth from passing over the up per edge of the fender proper, or it may 3) and the handles, of the strip E, provided with 1 body portion of the strip E, substantially as shown and described.
slotted extensions E at right angles to the 15 body portion of the strip and bent, as at E and upwardly curved, as at E the set-nuts K, the bolt J, and the sheet-metal adjustable supplemental portion L, adjustable in the In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
DRUSILLA O. MOCONNELL.
