(N11 Modem D. M. STBVENSON.
FOLDING BBDSTEAD.
WIT/VESSES @VM/Ul INVENTOR.
I @MQ/mf ATTORNEY. y
NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DONALD M. STEVENSON, OF HAMILTON, OHIO.
FOLDING BEDSTEAD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters 1"*atentl No. 464,047, dated December 1, 1891.
Application filed February 20, 1891. Serial No. 382,226. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern,.-
Be it known that I, DONALD M. STEvENsoN, of Hamilton, Butler county, Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Bedsteads, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to that class of bedA steads used in parlors or elsewhere that may be folded together when not in use to occupy less door-space and present an ornamental appearance.
The objects of my improvements are to provide adjustments of the several parts in relation to each other to secure easy and perfect folding, to locate the pivots of the folding parts to sustain the greater weight thereof, to provide supporting-legs that automatically take and retain their supporting position and return within and form part of ornamental brackets when not in use, and to secure economical construction and combination of the several parts ofthe bedstead. I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a side elevation of the bedstead open; Fig. 2, a side elevation of the saine closed; Fig. 3, an enlarged vertical section of the top portion of the cabinet; Fig. 4, a diametrical transverse vertical section of Fig. 3 on the same enlarged scale; Fig. 5, a transverse vertical section, on an enlarged scale, of a bracket and supporting-leg 4in the position shown in Fig. 1; Fig. f6, a plan in section of a portion of Fig. l on a line with the top of receptacle O.
In the drawings, A represents a stationary vertical case or cabinet, from the top of which the folding parts of the bedstead are suspended B, the base portion of cabinet A, usually mounted on casters; C, a folding receptacle to contain the mattress and bedding; D, a beam suspended from plate @by adjustable bolt E to oscillate vertically within chamber b, provided in the top of cabinet A therefor; F, bars of iron or other suitable material depending loosely from the extremities of beam D through slots cto within cabinet A, formed with angles Gr and terminating in hooks d; H, lugs projecting from the inner sides of receptacle C to engage hooks d to sustain the weight of said receptacle, and on which the salne may turnl in being folded; I, frictionrollers attached to extensions J to operate on the front edges of cabinet A; J extensions of the sides of receptacle C, being higher and nearer together to pass within cabinet A and recessed to receive lugs H and the lower portion of bars F; K, a head-board hinged at L to fold over the pillows; M, weights to nearly balance receptacle C on lugs Il; N, a section or panel of the front of base B, attached to and carried by receptacle C; O, vertically-recessed ornamental brackets attached to receptacle C and provided with rear chambers g, and. P supporting-legs for the foot or projecting end of receptacle C, pivoted within the vertical recesses in the face of brackets O through slots f. The front edges of said legs conform in contour to andcomplete the face of said brackets. Said legs swing outwardly and depend vertically as receptacle C is unfolded from cabinet A, until they meet the iioor, when the tops thereof enter chambers g and fasten said legs in a vertical position. When receptacle C is being folded, legs P drop from chambers g and resume their places automatically within brackets O. Proj ections h on the front edges of legs P assist to perfectlyjclose and retain said legs in place. Strips t' project above the inner sides of receptacle C to lap within the sides of cabinet A to cover the joints of contact. A hook or latch may be used to fasten the receptacle to the cabinet when closed together. Receptacle C may be detached for transportation by disengaging lugs H from hooks d. When closed, the bottom of receptacle C becomes the front of the bedstead, and may contain a mirror and be otherwise ornamented to suit different fancies.
In closing the bedstead the oscillation of beam D permits a limited side motion of receptacle C, suspended therefrom by bars F,
IOO
claim such combinations, broadly; but in the present state 0f the art What I do claim, and desire to secure by y Letters Patent, is-
5 1. In combination, a vertical case supported by a base, a pivot vertically adjustable in Jehe top thereof, a beam connected by its center to said pivot, bars depending,` from the ends of said beam, angular bends therein, and
ro a receptacle with supporting-legs removably pivoted to the ends of said bars.
2. In'combnation, a vertical case supported by a base, a folding receptacle suspended by angular bars from the ends of a beam, an adjustable pivot connecting the center of said x 5 beam to the top of said case, brackets on the front of said receptacle, and supportinglegs pivoted' in and concealed by said brackets.
DONALD M. STEVENSON.
