AMBROSE B. CLARK, OF MERIDEN, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR OI! ONE-HALF TO D. J. CLARK, OF SAME PLACE.
FASTENER FOR THE MEETING-RAILS OF SASHES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 463,984, dated November 24, 1891.
7 Application filed August 15, 1891. Serial No. 402,726. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AMBROSE B. CLARK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Meriden, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sash-Locks; and I do hereby declare the following to bea full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which to it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention has relation to looks for the meeting-rails of sashes; and it consists in the construction and novel combination of parts, as hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim. I
In the drawings forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a top view of a sash-fastener embodying the improvements of my invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the 2 same. Fig. 3 is a view in perspective of the base portion of ,the fastener. Fig. at is a bottom View of the pivoted cam-lever. Fig. 5 is a verticalrseetional View of the cam-lever on line a; at, Fig. 4. Fig. 6 is a bottom view of the latch. Fig. 7 is a bottom view of the fastener in the locked position, portions of the latch being shown in dotted lines. Fig. 8 is a top view of the latch. Fig. 9 is a plan of the top of the base.
Referring by numerals to the accompanying drawings, like numerals indicate corresponding parts in the several figures of the same.
The base-plate 1 comprises a casting having a raised portion 2, provided with an integral upwardly-projecting latch-seat 3, which is provided with a centrally-disposed pin-hole 4, and a rectangularly-shaped notch 6 in its periphery. The raised portion 2 is also pro- 4 vided with a lip or shoulder 7, which projects from the peripheral line of the latch-seat 3 and serves as a stop or shoulder, against which the integral lug S, on the lower side of the turning and sliding latch 9, abuts when said catch is turned into the open or unlocked position.
It will be seen from the accompanying drawings that the lip 6 of the rectangular notch 6, or that side of said notch toward which the catch is moved when it is being placed in a locked position, is slightly extended and provides a stop or abutment, against which the lug 8 impinges when said catch is in a locked position. It will be seen that the movement of said latch is thus con- 5 5 fined within the quadrant of acircle-that is to say, the lug 8 may be reciprocated between the shoulder 7 and the lip 6.
The base-plate is further provided with integral projecting arms 10 11, provided with screw-holes 12 for the passage of the securing-screw by which base-plate 1 is secured to the meeting-rail of the lower window-sash. The turning and sliding catch 9 is provided with a depending rim or flange 13 around its larger end, said flange or rim fitting over the raised portion 2 of the base-plate. The catch 9 is provided at its normally free end with a hook 14, which is designed to engage the lip. or hook 15 of the keeper 16, which keeper is in practice to be secured to the lower or meeting rail of the upper sash, being provided with screw-holes in its projecting ends 17 for such purpose. On its upper side the turning and sliding catch 9 is provided with a short upwardly-proj ectin g stud 18, which enters and operates within the arc-shaped or cam slot 19 in the lower face of the operating-lever or top piece 20, the disk-shaped head of which is provided with an integral centrally-disposed So and downwardly-projecting pivot-pin 21. The lower end of the pivot-pin 21 passes through and turns in a longitudinally-disposed fiat retaining-spring 22, which serves to hold the parts firmly together, while at the same time it is sufficiently yielding to permit the operating-lever to be turned to move the latch into and out of engagement with the keeper and into the notch 6 when the catch or latch is in the locked position. The fastening or go look can only be opened by turning the handle or lever in the proper direction.
After the several parts have been formed as described and shown I assemble the same in their respective operative positions as fol- 5 lows: Upon the base-plate 1 I place the latch 9, so that its downwardly-projecting flange 13 will encircle the seat The top piece 20 is then placed in position by entering the pivotpin 21 in the pin-hole at. After the parts are [00 I thus assembled the spring 22, with its central aperture, is placed on the under side of the base, so as to receive the projecting end of the pivot-pin 21, and said end is then upset sufficiently to hold the parts snugly together.
It is believed that the operation will be readily understood, though it may be pertinent for me to call attention to the fact that when the catch 9 is turned home into engagement with the keeper its lug 8 will come into alignment With the rectangular notch 6 in the raised portion 2 of the latch-seat 3, and when the lever or top piece 20 is further turned the cam-slot 19 in the lower face thereof engaging the stud 18 of the catch will move said catch laterally inward, so as to seat the lug 8 thereof in the notch 6 of the raised portion 2 of the latch-seat 3, and thus effectively lock the latch against lateral movement, except when the handle on the top piece is again moved around parallel with the meeting-rail.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, with the base-plate hav- 111g a raised portion provided with an upwardly-projecting latch-seat having a peripheral shoulder and a centrally-disposed pinhole and arect-angular notch formed in the periphery of the latch-seat, of a recessed flanged latch-hook provided with a stop lu g to engage the notch in the latch-seat, an upwardly-projecting stud at the middle point 011 its upper face, and the operating-lever providedwiththecentrally-disposeddownwardlyprojectiug pivotpin, and an arc-shaped recess in its lower face for engaging the stud on the upper face of the turning and sliding catch, and the retaining-spring secured to the lower end of the pivot-pin, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
AMBROSE 11. CLARK.
