SHOW-CA8 E.
SPEOIFIGATIQN forming part of Letters Patent No. 463,932, dated November 24, 1891.
Application filed September 25, 1890- Serial No. 366,137. (No model.)
T0 and whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE E. ALLISON, of the city of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Show-Cases, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
My improvement consists in making the ends of the show-case to slide endwise, and in the described devices to this end.
Figure I is a perspective View of a showcase having the novel construction. Figs. II and III are detail vertical longitudinal sections at II III, Fig. IV, showing the movable or sliding end, respectively,in its inner and outer position. Fig. IV is a detail transverse vertical section at IV IV, Fig. II. Fig. V is a front elevation of a show-case, illustrating a modification of the device. Fig. VI is a horizontal section at VI VI, Fig. V.
The fixed body 1 of the show-case has a base 2, with longitudinal bars 3 and transverse bars 4.
5 are fixed uprights extending from the base 2 to the top 6. The top has longitudinal bars 7 and transverse bars 8.
9 are suitable shelves in the body or fixedpart of the case.
At each end of the case is a movable rectangular frame 10, forming portions of the ends and sides or forming the ends and portions of the adjacent sides, sliding parallel with said sides, and having at the base longitudinal bars 1] and transverse bars 12 and at the top similar bars 13 and 14, respectively.
15 are uprights connecting the base and i0 lhe two sliding frames 10 may be alike in all particulars, and thus a description of one will apply equally to the other. The longitudinal bars 11 rest upon a roller 16, whose gudgeons have journal-bearing in the longitudinal sill or side bars 3 of the base.
17 is a roller whose gudgeons 18 have bearing in the side bars 11, said roller bearing upon the tops of the sill-bars 3. Thusit will be seen that the frame 10 may be readily moved inward and outward, as its weight is sup ported on the rollers 16 and 17.
19 is a roller similar to the roller 17 and whose gudgeons 20 have bearing in the bars 13. The roller 19 bears against the under side of the side bars 7 of the top 6, so as to steady the frame 10 in its movements.
21 are guide-strips fixed to the top of the sill-bars 3 and to the bottom of the top bar 7 and working in grooves of the bars 11 and 13, so as to guide the frame 10 in a direct endwise course. I
22 are shelves in the sliding end frames 10.
23 are stop-pins which limit the outward movement of the frames 10 by the impact against the pins of the cross-bars 12 and 14. (See Fig. III.)
The case is provided with glass panes, as usual.
The frames 10, as seen in Fig. I, have less depth than the main body of the case, so that when they are drawn out, as seen at the right hand in Fig. I, goods upon the part 9 of the fixed shelves are exposed to direct view from the front, and easy access may be had to such goods. The lower shelf 22of the sliding frame is a little lower than the lower shelf 9 of the fixed body, so that as he sliding frame 10 is moved inward the extension 22 of the shelf 22 passes beneath the shelf 9*. (See Fig. II.)
In the modification shown in Figs. V and VI the sliding frames 10 have equal depth with the fixed frame or body 1; but the showcase is similar in other respects, and as simi: lar reference-numbers are used no further description will be requiied.
I claim as my invention The show-case having the sliding end portions or sub-cases adapted also to form portions of one side thereof and having inward top and bottom extensions, the bottom extensions adapted to project under the bottom of the case proper and the supporting and guiding rollers, and guiding pins and grooves for said sliding end portions, substantially as specified.
GEORGE E. AELIsoN.
In presence of THos. KNIGHT,
A. M. EBERSOLE.
