Description

(No Model.) 1.
F. B. WILLIAMS. L BG ATTACHMENT FOR FOLDING BEDSTEADS. No. 463,411.
Patented Nov. 17, 1891.
=5: a mu II M UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FITZALLAN B. IVILLIAMS, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
LEG ATTACHMENT FOR FOLDING BEDSTEADS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 463,411, dated November 17, 1891,
Application filed July 30, 1891. Serial No. 401,179. (No modeLl To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FITZALLAN B. TIL- LIAMs, of Chicago, in the State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Leg Attachments for Folding Bedstea'ds, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my improvements is to provide a sheath, sliding leg, and latch in such form that they can be cast separately and can.
be secured together in working relation by placing the leg and latch within the sheath and securing the latter to the.bed-frame. This object I have attained in the device having separate parts constructed as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is asectional view through afragment of the bed-frame, showing the application of the leg attachment thereto, as seen in position when the bed is closed. Fig. 2 is a like view to that shown in Fig. 1, but showin g the posit-ion of the parts when the bed is opened. Fig. 3 is an enlarged rear elevation, in fragment, of the leg-sheath and a stoppiece. Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the sheath without the stop-piece. Fig. 5 is an enlarged detail showing a stop-piece in perspective. Fig. 6 is an enlarged perspective of the leg detached. Fig. 7 is a detail of the catch in perspective.
In the drawings, A designates the side rail .of the bed-frame, and A the foot-rail of the same.
A designates the sheath, which is provided with ears having screw-holes, whereby it is adapted to be secured to the bed-frame. Said sheath is provided with a groove or channel a, a stop a at the end of the channel, and a notch a in each of the side walls of said sheath near the lower end.
B designates the leg; I), a depression in the same, and b an opening on the opposite side extending through to said depression.
0 designates a latch, c a pin upon said latch, which is adapted to be engaged by the depression b, which serves as its bearing when the latch is placed in the opening I). Said latch also has a lug c, which is adapted to travel in the groove or channel a of the sheath as the leg is shoved inward or pulled outward in said sheath.
D is a stop-piece, which consistsof a cen tral. piece cl, preferably cylindrical, so that it may be inserted in a hole made by a bit in the bed-frame, and having ears 61, provided with screw-holes adapted to receive screws for separately securing said stop-piece in place on the bed-frame. Said ears are also adapted to engage in the notches a in the sheath A for the better securing of said sheath and stop-piece together and preventing their relative displacement. A recess (Z is made in the cylindrical part of the stop-piece D to engage the upper end of the lip c of the latch C when the leg is extended.
In operation, as the bed is opened the leg B slides outward by gravity, and when the bed-frame approximates the horizontal position the upper end or lip c of the latch C, protruding through the opening I) of the leg B, falls outward and engages the recess 01 of the stop-piece D, and holds the leg extended. If the latch should fail to so fall into engagement, thelug c, striking the stop a, will throw it into engagement. Said lug and stop also serve the further purpose of preventing the leg B from falling clear out of the sheath A The latch C, engaging the stop-piece D, securely locks the leg B in its extended position in the sheath to support the foot end of the bed-frame when let down to the horizontal.
It will be seen that the sheath A and the leg 13, the latch C, with its pin 0 and lug c, and the stop-piece D are of such form that each can be cast separately, and thatthey are adapted to be placed together and secured in working relation with one another without the aid of any means except their form alone, by having the sheath containing the leg, latch, and stop-piece secured to the bed-frame.
Having thus described myinvention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
1. A leg attachment for folding bedsteads, composed of an open-sided sheath A provided with ears havingscrew-holes, Wherebv it is adapted to be secured to the bed-frame, aleg B, having a depression I) and an opening' b, extending through the leg at said depression, a latch C, provided with an integral pin 0, projecting from its opposite sides and adapted to engage in said depression of the leg when the latch is applied in said opening, and a stop d adapted to engage said latch when the leg is extended, as specified.
2. A leg attachment for folding bedsteads, composed of an opensided sheath, as A adapted to be secured to the bed-frame and having a notch a near its lower end, aleg, as B, provided with a depression I) and an opening 1') near its upper end, a latch, as 0, provided with a pin a, projecting from its opposite sides so as to enter said depression when the latch is fitted in said opening in the leg, and a stop-piece, as D, adapted to engage the notch (t of the sheath and the upper end of said latch when the leg is extended, as specified.
3. A leg attachment for folding bedsteads,
composed of an open-sided sheath provided with perforated ears for securing it to the bedframe and having a stop, as a, at its lower end, aleg, as B, provided with a depression I) and an opening b at its upper end, and a latch, as 0, provided with a pin a and a lug c, said latch being adapted to be applied in said opening of the leg with said pin in the depression thereof, and to engage a stop, as a, of the sheath at one side and a stop, as (Z secured to the sheath on the other side, for the purpose specified.
