DRESS-FORM.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 463,346, dated November 17, 1891.
Application filed October 25, 1888- Serial No. 289,158. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM VoeLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Somerville, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new an d useful Improvement in Adjustable Dress-Forms, of which the following is a specification.
Myinvention has reference especially to the means of operating the adjusting devices of the dress-form.
Heretofore the adjusting mechanism of dress-forms has usually been operated by collars, which the operator would slide by hand up and down the standard. The construction of the dress-form makes this method diflicult and awkward. Another means has been to employ adjusting devices, which, by revolving the dress-form .upon the standard, would, by means of a nut and screw-thread and intermediate connections, expand and contract the form.
My invention enables me to operate the adj usting devices by a simpler and quicker method than either of those above mentioned.
Like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the figures of the drawings.
Figure 1 shows a side elevation of an adj ustable dress-form. Fig. 2 shows a longitudinal section of the same. Fig. 3 is an en larged vertical section of the neck portion.
The general construction of the dress-form is the same as that of those commonly in use, having a central standard and a form representing the general outline of a ladys dress, and divided'into four longitudinal sections, the sections being supported upon adjusting mechanism and connected to the standard thereby. Fixed to the standard by a pin is a collar A, to which is pivoted a series of braces 13, which incline upwardly and whose outer ends are pivoted to the waistband of the dress form. Another series of braces O is pivoted to the waistband at or near the pivotal points The braces C incline upwardly and have their inner ends pivoted to a sleeve or tube D, surrounding the standard, to the upper end of which sleeve or tube D is fitted a knob or handle E, provided with a set-screw extending through the handle and the tube or sleeve D to the standard.
It is obvious that by sliding the tube or a at any given height.
against the standard, so as to fix the tube D.
Pivoted to the lower portion of the skirt-form is another series of braces F, which incline downwardly and are pivotedat'their inner ends to the collar. G, which rests upon an adjustable collar H, provided with a set-screw. The standard fits and turns in a tubular rod L, which is supported upon feet in the usual way.
J is an adjustable collar upon the standard, which is designed to maintain the dress-form At the neck is provided means for adjusting the form laterally, which I have shown in an application of even date herewith and serially numbered 289,156, and do not claim herein.
I am aware that adj usting-braces have been connected to screw-threaded nuts or collars, which require that either the dress-form or the standard shall be rotated, and also that adj usting-braces have been pivoted to sleeves located entirely inside the form. In the first case the turning of the form or standard involved an unnecessary expenditure of time, and in the second case the operator is required to insert his hand through the frame, and when the set-screw is released the collar is liable to slip and allow the frame to collapse, in which event it is difficult to readjust, and
it is at all times inconvenient to operate.
I am aware that in a prior dress-form the bust portion has been made vertically-adj ustable on the standard'by means of a sleeve provided with a set-screw and extended above the sections of the bust, which latter could be expanded by rotation, the waist portion of the form being made expansible by means of horizontally-arranged screws, and such construction is not of my invention.
13y myimprovement the tubular sleeve D is made in eifect an extension of the standard and reaches above the sections of the form and down near to the waist region and is easily accessible. One series of braces is pivotally connected to the sections and to the fixed standards, and the other series in like manner connected to the sections and to the tube D,Which latter may he styled a movable its inner end to a collar A,fixcd to the standard, and the braces C, each pivotally connected to one of said sections at its outer end and at its inner end to a verticallyfsliding tube D, said tube extending above the e'xpansible sec tions of the dress-form at the neck and down to near the region of the waist and adjustable by a direct vertical movement on the standard and. provided with devices for se curing it thereon, whereby the form can be expanded or contracted by moving the tube on the standard and all the sections moved simultaneously, substantially as set forth.
