Description

N M d l. 9 G. s. DIPPRY.
GURTAIN STRETUHE-R.
No. 463,303. Patented Nov. 17,1891.
ATTORNEY.
UNITED STATES ATENT OFFICE.
GIDEON S. DIPPRY, OF CANTON, OHIO.
CURTAIN-STRETCHER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 463,303, dated November 17, 18 91. 7
Application filed August 8, 1891. Serial No, 402,137. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, GIDEON S. DIPPRY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Canton, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Curtain-Stretchers; and I do herebydeclare that the following isafull, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, in which Figure 1 is a view showing the frame extended and a curtain properly attached thereto. Fig. 2 is a View showing the frame partially folded. Fig. 3 is a detached View of one of the retaining-needles. Fig. 4 is a transverse section of one of the frame-bars showing a suspending-hook properly located and showing the curtain-retaining bars properly fixed thereto, also showing curtain-hooks properly attached. Fig. 5 are detached views of the curtain-hooks and staples, showing modified forms of hooks for securing and holding the curtain. Fig. 6 is a View showing one corner of the frame and a clamping-bolt. Fig. 7 is a detached View of the stay designed and calculated to hold the frame rigid while in an extended position. Fig. 8 is a View showing portions of the frame and one of the hinges, also showing the notches for receiving and holding the ends of the stay.
The present invention has relation to curtain-stretchers; and it consists in the different parts and combination of parts, hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.
In the accompanying drawings, Arepresents the side bars or rails, and may be of any desired length, reference being had to the length of the curtain to be stretched. For the purpose of folding the frame proper when not in use these side rails are hinged about midway between the end rails or bars B. The end rails or bars 13 are located substantially as illustrated in Fig. 1, and are securely attached to the side bars A by means of the rivets aor the clamping-bolts b.
To one of the side rails A are movahly attached the curtain-bars O, which curtain-bars are held to the side bar A by means of the cords c and the staples d or their equivalents.
In the drawings three curtain-bars O are shown, but it will be understood that a greater or less number may be employed, if desired, the number of curtain-bars corresponding with the number of curtains to be stretched and dried at any one time.
To one of the end rails or bars is attached the rod D, which rod may be securely attached to the end rail B, or, if desired, said bar may be removably attached, the manner of attaching the bar or rod 1) being immaterial.
To one of the side railsA are attached the rods E, which rods may, if desired, be remov ably attached, and if removably attached their inner ends may be pointed, as illustrated, for the purpose of piercing the curtain or curtains.
One of the end bars B is provided with any desired number of curtain-bars O, which are substantially the same and are attached in the same manner as the ones fixed to the side bar A. In use the curtain is attached at one of its ends and sides to the rods D and E by means of the hooksF or their equivalents, after which the opposite side and end of the curtain is fixed to the curtain-bar O by means of the rods G and the hooks F, at which time the curtain is properly stretched and held by means of the cords c, which cords may be wrapped around the suspending-hooks e and the pin f.
For the purpose of securely holding the frame proper in an extended position and prevent the same from collapsing, the stay H is provided, which is substantially of the form shown in Fig. 7, the ends of said stay being properly seated in the notches g, which notches are located or formed in the side rails A, or, if desired, brackets maybe employed to take the place of the notches g.
It will be seen that by my peculiar arrangement I am enabled to properly stretch a lace curtain or curtains and prevent the same from shrinking while being dried.
It will be understood that any desired number of curtains may be attached and dried at one time.
For the purpose of suspending the frame proper, together with the curtain or curtains attached thereto, from a clothes-line, the suspending-hooks e are provided, which suspending-hooks may be located substantially as shown in the drawings.
I prefer to securely attach the rods G to the curtain-bars O and attach any desired number of hooks or pins, such as shown in Fig. 5, to the rods G, and so adjust said hooks that they may be adjusted to any desired point between the staples h. g
It will also be understood that hooks may be attached to the end rails B or to one of the side rails A, if desired; but Iprefer to attach the hooks to the bars D, E, and G, as shown and described.
For the purpose of adjusting the length of the frame proper the elongated slots 7c are provided, and when it is desired to construct a frame so that it can be adjusted or changed in length and Width the elongated slots 70 are provided or formed at each corner of the I frame.
In the event it is desired to stretch and dry a number of curtains at one time of the same size they may, if desired, all be attached to one set of the curtain-bars O by means of the rods and hooks, or they may be attached to separate bars. The main object of providing a series of the curtain-bars C is to provide a means for stretching and drying curtains of 1. The combination of the side rails A, the
end rails B, the bar or rod D, the bars or rods E, the curtain-bars (3,- adj ustably fixed to the frame proper, and means for attaching acurtain or curtains to the frame and to the curtain-bars, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. The combination of the hinged bars A, the end bars B, the stay H, the curtain-bars C, the cords c, and means for attaching the sides and ends of a curtain or curtains, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
3. The combination of a folding frame provided with bars D, E, and G, the hooks F, the suspending-hooks e, a series of bars 0, the cords c, and means for bracing or staying the frame in an extended position, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto set my hand.
GIDEON S. DIPPRY.
