UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH F. HEW'ITT, OF ALLEGHENY, PENNSYLVANIA.
LINING FOR FIRE-PLACES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 463,278, dated November 17, 1891.
Application filed November 28, 1890. Serial No. 372,929. (No motleld To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH F. HEWITT, of Allegheny, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Linings for Fire- Places; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to linings for fireplaces, and is especially designed for use where gas serves as the fuel.
Ithas for its object the production of a flexible refractory non-combustible fire-back, capable of adapting itself to chimneys of different widths and of assuming a shape or position therein best suited to reflect heat into the room, at the same time presenting means of retarding to a certain degree heated products of combustion, thus insuring a maximum amount of heat from the fuel consumed by encouraging a more thorough combustion.
'1heinvention will be hereinafter described, and more particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification, Figure 1 represents a transverse vertical section of my invention applied to one form of a flre-place; Fig. 2, same, set at a different angle and adapted to a fire-place of different form; Fig. 3, a vertical section of the invention; Fig. at, a front elevation thereof, and Figs. 5, 6, and 7 the same, showing modifications of apertures in upper end; and Fig. 8, a vertical section showing one flange bent into its preferred form and the same in dotted lines before bending.
Reference being had to the drawings and the letters thereon, A indicates an ordinary open. fire-place, and b a flue or chimney communicating therewith; O, my improved lining or fire-back, consisting of sheet-asbestos or equivalent material in one or more layers adapted to assume a configuration best suited to reflect heat in the direction desired, and provided atits upper end with an aperture or apertures f, through which the waste products of combustion pass into chimney B.
D D represent side flanges formed integral with lining O, projecting at right angles thereto and serving to receive nails or other fastenings for securing said lining in position against the adjacent side walls of the fire-place, which walls are shielded and protected from direct heat of the fire by said intervening flanges.
To the face of lining C may be affixed a quantity of fibrous asbestos, which, being directly acted upon by the flame of the fire, becomes incandescent, adds to the heating capacity of the fire by presenting greater heating-surface, and insures a glowing and cheerful appearance. Owing to its flexibility, the lining is adapted to fit fire-places of different shapes, though, when the latter will permit, it is preferred to adopt that illustrated by Fig.
2 on accountof its superior heat-reflecting qualities and the means presented for retarding the too rapid exit of products of coinbustion. The lining is also adj ustahle with relation to the width of the fire-place, inasm uch as the width of the lining depends upon the amountof material turned into the flanges.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- A flexible curved back wall and lining for fireplaces made of asbestos paper or analogous material having openings in its upper end to permit passage of smoke, and integral side flanges for securing it within a fire-place.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 21st dayof November, A. D. 1890.
JOSEPH F. HEWITT. Witnesses:
