. UNITED STATES PATENT OF ICE.
ISAAC M. SPENCER, OF OSGEOLA, ILLINOIS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 463,002, dated November 10, 1891.
Application filed April 16, 1891.
To all whom it may concern.-
Beit known that I,'IsAAo M. SPENCER, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Osceola, in the county of Stark and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and use-- ful Improvements in Axes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in axes.
The object of the invention is to provide an ax with a bit on its upper edge as well as its front edge, so that there will be less friction in withdrawing the cutting-edge; and it consists in providing an ax'with a bit on the upper portion of the head of the ax in front of its eye, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a side view of an ax constructed in accordance with my invention, and Fig. 2 a sectional view taken on the line a: x of Fig. 1.
The head and eye of the ax are made in the usual manner, and the front edge is provided with a bit B, which forms the usual cuttingedge. The upper edge of the ax in front of An ax Serial No. 389,199. (No model.)
thus constructed can be easily withdrawn from the wood in chopping, and wood-cutting is therefore rendered much easier. The construction is also advantageous in dressing lumber or logs, as the upper bit can be used in dressing or cutting olf small slivers much more expeditiously than with axes as usually made. The bit 0 can also be used for cutting overhead in clearing branches and for other purposes.
This invention may also be applied to double-bitted axes.
I am aware that prior to nhy invention it has been proposed to provide an ax with a concave cutting-edge, which has been extended around, so that the front portion of the head at its upper and lower edges would have a cutting-edge, thus making an ax which could be reversed upon the handle, and I do not claim such. construction as my invention; but
"Whatl do claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
As an improved article of'manufacture, an aX-head havingapolland eye of ordinary construction, and a bit 0, form ed on the upper portion of the head forward of the eye to extend above the same and joining at the front with a bit B, substantially as shown, and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
' ISAAC M. SPENCER.

JOHN BEATTIE.
