SPUD.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 5, 1907.
Application filed May 7,1906. Serial No. 315,619.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES E. Roor, a citizen of the United States, residing at Blaney, in the county of Schoolcraft and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spuds and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in spuds. I
The object of the invention is to provide a tool of this character by means of which the bark may be quickly and easily removed from cedar or other logs in the preparation of the same, as for use as telegraph poles or fenceposts, and in which the blade of the spud is braced and the pressure is equally distributed to prevent breaking of the blade on opposite sides of the handle.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
Figure 1 is a plan view of a spud cosn structe'd in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same, and Fig. 3 is a central longitudinal sectional view thereof.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 denotes the blade of the spud, said blade being constructed in any suitable form or shape, preferably with a flat front face and having a beveled cutting edge 2, as shown. Formed integral with and offset from the upper end of the blade 1 is a shank 3, the free end of which is enlarged and provided with a socket 4, an annular shoulder 3 being formed at the beginning of the socket.
Connected with the upper edges of the blade 1 at opposite sides are brace-rods 5, the opposite ends of which are connected to the shank 3 adjacent to the inner end of the socket portion 4 below the annular shoulder length of the tool will be about four feet,
thereby enabling the same to be conveniently used by an operator standing upon the log which is to be peeled. By securing the upper ends of the brace-rods 5 to the shank just below the annular shoulder 3 the pressure or weight applied to the handle is equally distributed across the entire width of the blade and the strength thereof increased.
By the use of a spud or tool constructed in accordance with the invention cedar posts or poles may be quickly and easily dressed and prepared for use.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention Wll be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A spud comprising a shank having a blade formed integral with one end thereof and offset therefrom, said shank being enlarged at its connection with said blade and extended down on the rear face thereof to form a strengthening-rib, said blade having a cutting edge and the shank being bowed inwardly above the blade and provided at its free end with a socket, and brace-bars attached to the upper edge of said blade and to said shank, said bars converging from the blade toward the shank.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
