UNITED STATES l PATENT VFFICE.
CHARLES F. PIDGIN, 0F CAMBRIDG. l, lllASSACllUSE'l" SHEET-MUSIC.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 462,972, dated November 10, 1891.
i Application filed February 27I 1891. Serial No. 3831109. (Model.)
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES F. P1De1N,of Cambridge, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sheet-Music, (for which I have made application for Letters Patent of Canada, which application was filed February 27, 1891, and given number 56,144 of which the following is a specification.
My invention has relation to sheet-music, and has for its object the provision of such 4improvements as-will enable a portion to be cut or detached from the title or other page of a piece of sheet-m usic without marring the page and permit of the use of the said portion as a coupon in the purchase of a new piece, as well as in the transmission of money through the mails to effect such purchase.
Myinvention consists of the improvements which I will now proceed to describe and claim, reference being had to the annexed drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, forming a part of this specitication, the sameletters designating the same parts or features, as the case may be, Wherever they occur.
Ot' the drawings, Figure l represents the title-page of a piece of sheet-music drawn to a reduced scale. Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on the line 2 2 of Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a front View of a fragment of Fig. l after the portion to be used as a coupon has been out out. Fig. et is a front view of the cover for the couponspace. Fig. 5 is a rear view of Fig. 3. Fig. G is a rear view of the coupon.
In carrying out my invention I print upon the title or other page of apiece of sheet-music a portion a with a surrounding (or it may be a partially-surrounding line) b, for a purpose to be presently explained. In the present instance I have shown the portion a and line of demarcation as round, though they may loe of any other shape. The portion is so arranged and the printing upon the page is so placed as to adapt the said portion to be cut out and yet leave the regular printed matter, ornamental borders, dsc., intact, the line l) serving as aguide in the cutting out of the coupon.
c designates a cover for the space caused by the removal of portion a, which cover is,
as shown, greater in diameter than the said portion, and has its edges d gummed, so that the cover. c may be pasted upon` the back of the sheetI c and cover the space from which the said portion was cut, as is represented in Fig. 3. A suitable ornamental iigure f may, if desired, be printed upon the face of the cover, so that after the same is pasted on the sheet it will not only appear as an integral part, but enhance the tosthetio effect thereof.
- The cover c may be temporarily secured to the sheet before the portion u, is cut out in any suitable way. As shown in Figs. 4 and 5, the cover is temporarily tacked to the sheet by means of thin paper clips g, extending from the cover to the sheet and pasted upon both.
The exact temporary location of the cover c is immaterial, the object of so attaching it to the sheet being to prevent its loss. One location which might be preferred would be to tack it by means of the clips g, With the face of the cover to the said back. Then when the portion a is to be cut out one of the clips may be torn and the cover folded back (the other clip acting as a hinge) to prevent marring the cover by the cutting implement. Then after cutting out the said portion ct the gunimed edge of the coverc will be moistened andthe cover laid back to its original position, the said edge being caused to adhere to the sheet e around the opening.
I may provide a suitably-gummed piece of paper h, adapted to be pasted upon the back of the coupon, as is represented in Fig. 6, so that a coin-as, for example, a dime-maybe contined between the coupon and paper piece 7L pasted thereover to enable the piece of money to be conveniently transmitted through the mails with the coupon.
Suitable directions concerning the use of the coupon and cover may be printed thereon.
By my invention I provide means whereby purchasers of music may procure the same directly from the publisher and so obtain the advantage of reduced rates, which may be offered because of direct purchase or because of buying all music from a single publisher or dealer. y
Having thus explained the nature of my invention and described a way in which the IOO same may be made and used, though without l cover for the space caused by the removal of attemptingl to describe all of the forms of Consaid portion, said cover beinglztrger in diame- I5 struction, I declare that what I claim is ter than the outlined portion and having zt 1. A sheet ofnlusie provided with zt figure `gununed edfre, as, set forth. i outlined thereupon for indicating the size and In testimony whereof I have signed my shape of 2v portion to be removed therefrom name to this specification, in the presence or" for use as zt coupon, said sheet having also a two subscribing witnesses, this 19th dey of zo cover for the space causedv by the removal of February, A. D. 1391.
said portion, as set f orth. CHARLES E PIDGIN.
2. A sheet of muslo provided with a figure outlined thereupon for indicating the size and shape of a portion to be removed therefrom l for use as a, coupon7 said sheet having also it lVitnesses:
