SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 462,818, dated November 10, 1891.

To all whom it may concern:
Be itknown that we, GEORGE A. DENNIS and RICHARD EVANS, citizens of the United States, residing at Mitchelhin the countyof Davison and State of South Dakota, have invented a new and useful Clothes-Line Reel, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in clothes-line reels.
The object of the present invention is to pro vide a combined clothes-line reel and receptacle for clothes-pins which can be readily secured to a post, and which will be adapted to readily tighten clothes-lines, and contain the same when not in use, and which will hold the clothes-pins within easy reach.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claim hereto appended.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a combined clothes-line reel and clothes-pin receptacle constructed in accordance with this invention, and illustrating the manner of attachment to a post. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view. Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse sectional view. Fig. 4E is"a detail perspective view of the pawl. Fig. 5 is a horizontal sectional view. Fig. (3 is a detail view of the pawl and shaft.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, 1 designates a casing constructed of sheet metal or similar material, consisting of the sides 2, having a circular top portion 3 and a bottom portion provided with a curved edge 4, and a continuous strip 5 of metal connecting the sides and forming the bottom, the back, the top, and the front of the casing, which has the cylindrical upper portion, in which is mounted a reel, and the lower portion forms a bin or receptacle to receive clothes-pins, and has an opening 6 at its front, near the curved edge 4:, which is normally closed by a curved door '7, which is provided at its sides with flanges 8, and has its upper end 0 engaging the casing at the top of the opening, and its lower end is provided with a button 10, which engages the casing at the bottom of the opening. The reel 11 is mounted on the shaft 12 and is composed of a sleeve 13, secured to the shaft by screws 14, and disks 15, arranged at the ends of the sleeve and forming flanges. The shaft 12 has one end 16 squared and provided with a crank-handle 17, and it is journaled in a bearing of a U shaped frame 18, secured to the sides of the casing and extending around back of the same, and provided with perforations in which are secured the ends of a wire 19, that fastens the casing to a post 20, and the latter is provided with hooks 21 and 22, the former of which engages a perforation in the end of a bar secured to the bottom of the casing and extending rearward therefrom, and the hook 222 is engaged by the wire 19. The squared end 16 of the shaft is engaged by a pawl 21, which has one end pivoted to the metal frame 18, and the other end is provided with a recess 25, having one wall forming a square shoulder 26, adapted to engage the squared end of the shaft and prevent retrograde rotation, and the vertical wall or shoulder 26 of the recess is beveled at 27, and is arranged to be engaged by the shaft to lift the pawl and carry the shoulder 26 out of engagement with the squared portion when the reel is being wound, and the shoulder 26 is shorter than the width of the squared part of the shaft and the latter is enabled to get under the beveled edge to lift the pawl. The front of the cylindrical portion is provided with openings 28, through which the line passes.
It will be seen that the combined reel and clothes pin receptacle is simple and inexpensive in construction, and is adapted to be secured to a post, and has its reel and recepta' cle within easy reach.
