TAMPING-HANDLE FOR SHOVELS.

Be it known that I, ABIA B. SMITH, of Pittsburg, county of Allegheny, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain new and useful Improved Tainping-Handle for Shovels, of which the following is a true and exact description, referencebeing had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to shovel-handles of the kind known as tamping-handles, and has for its object to provide a handle at once strong and light, and which will have no cavity in which dirt can be lodged.

My invention consists in forming a tamping-handle of an integralcastingof malleable metal and with a hollow grasp-bar formed with one or more core-openings. In combination with this castingI provide aplug or plugs adapted to fit in the opening or openings of the grasp-bar and when driven therein to close said openings, the outer surface of the plug being flush with the outside of the grasp-bar.

Preferably the plugis formed as a lip on the edge of the opening in the grasp-bar, the said lip being of such dimensions that when bent down into the opening. it will close and fill the same. I also prefer in all cases to make the plug with a grooved edge, as this construction I have found enables it to take a better hold upon the edges of the opening in the grasp-bar.

Reference is now had to the drawings, which illustrate my invention, and in which- Figure 1 is a front view of the integral inalleable casting of the tamping-handle having Fig. 2 is a side View of a similar handle having an opening at the end of the grasp-handle. Fig. 3 is a cross-section on the line :1: 0c of Fig. 1, show ing openings both in the front face and at the end of the grasp-handle. A is the handle, and B the grasp-bar, which is formed hollow, as shown in Figs. 3 and 6.

D indicates the plug formed integral with the casting and has a lip on the edges of the openings formed therein. Vhere the independent plug is used it is simply driven into the opening after the core has been extracted, and where the lip-plug is used it is only necessary to bend it down into the opening The plugs after insertion are driven hom'ebya few quick blows, the groove d enabling it to take a strong hold upon the edges of the openings, and after the plug has been seated it is only necessary to smooth down the edges by filing or otherwise to fit the handle for use. The handle thus mad e is strong, light, and durable, and free from the liability to catch and hold dirt, which is found so objectionable in many tainping-handles now in use. At the same time the handle is easily made and a relatively cheap construction.

Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A tamping-handle for shovels made of an integral casting A, having a hollow grasp-bar formed with one or more core-openings, in combination with a plug or plugs adapted to close said opening or openings.
