QUILTING-FRAME.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 462,395, dated November 3, 1891.

To all whom, it may concern.-

Be it known that 1, WILLIAM HACKLY CHURCH, of Fenelon Falls,in thecountyof Victoria, in the Province of Ontario, in the Dominion of Oanada,have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Quilting-Flam es, (for which I have obtained a patent of the Dominion of Canada, No. 35,485, datedNovember 24, 1890;) andI do herebydeclare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved quilting-frame. Fig. 2 isa sideelevation of one corner of the frame and leg enlarged. Fig. 3 is an elevation of a leg, showing connection with the frame. Fig. & is a perspective view of the slide detached and enlarged. Fig. 5 is a perspective View of one end of the frame, showing attachment of an adjustable bar to suit curtains of different lengths; and Fig. 6 is a view of the bent-wire yoke and hooks by which said bar is held in position.

My invention has for its object to provide a readily-separable and inexpensive frame, which can be quickly adjusted to suit the size of the cloth to be quilted or curtain to be stretched to dry, and to stow compactly when not in use.

My invention consists in certain peculiarities of construction and combination of parts, to be hereinafter described with reference to the accompanying drawings, "and subsequently claimed. i

A A are the longitudinal side bars, and B B the end bars, of the quilting-frame, all of which bars may have a hinged joint at the middle and a hook 2 at the top, to lock the joint, whereby the bars can be folded to shorten them for convenience in handling and storing.

C are the legs near the ends of the side bars A, to support the frame. The side bars A are notched near the ends to receive the end bars slidingly, and said bars A, on the inner face, are provided with eyes D, to which the material to be quilted is laced by a cord, and the outer edge of the end bars B are provided with notches or saw-kerfs E.

screw or stop 4:,inserted in the bars A,whereby the tongue J will keep the bars B from rising out of the notch in bars A, in which they slide. \Vhen the bars Aand B are placed intersectingly, they are locked together by pushing the slides F, whereby the ends 5 of the slides will enter the saw-kerfs E in bars B and the tongue J pass under the screw-head or stop 4, after crossingthe bars B. The under side of the bars A, near their ends, is bored with a hole M, and a pin N projects into said hole from the side of the bar. The legs C are relished to fit the hole and provided with a peripheral groove 0, coinciding with the pin, said groove connected to the upper end of the leg by a vertical notch or passageway'P, to allow the pin to enter. the groove, and when the leg is partially rotated in the hole the pin and groove R will prevent the leg dropping away from the frame.

R is a fiat bar provided with small holes 5, to fasten curtains by pins inserted in the holes while the curtain is being dried and stretched,

and said bar is inserted into two bent-wire yokes T T, having at one end an angularlybent arm U to underlie the respective side bars A, and the other end provided with a flexible hook V to engage the eyes D on the inner face of said bars A, whereby said bar B may be adjusted at any desired distance from the end of the quilting-frame to suit curtains of different lengths, and said bar R may have a hinge-joint \V near the middle to shorten it for convenience of carriage or storage.

I claim as my invention 1. In a quilting-frame, the combination, with the legs O, of the side bars A A, having a notch near both ends,and a stop at, slides F, sleeved on said ends and having a tongue J hook V at the other end to engage said bars IO and eyes, respectively, and a flat bani provided with small holes S and inserted into said yokes, as set forth.
