SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 462,084, dated October 27, 1891.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be itknown that 1, WILLIAM PRINGLE MIL- LER, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Iniprovementin Stands for Displaying Boxes, &c., which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.

My invention consists of a stair shaped stand having novel features, as hereinafter pointed out. 7

It also consists of a stair-shaped stand having guards for preventing boxes, 850., placed thereon from slipping therefrom.

It also consists in providing the stand with a base and prop, which are hinged to the stand so as to be folded therewith.

It furtherconsists of novel means for looking the base and prop.

It also consists in providing the stand with a leg, which provides means for securing the same to a counter, table, 850., and preventing shifting thereof.

Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a stand embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a vertical section thereof. Fig. 3 represents a perspective view of the stand in folded condition. Figs. 4 and 5 represent perspective views of detached portions on an enlarged scale. Fig. 6 represents a perspective View of a portion of another form of the stand.

Referring to the drawings, A designates a stand formed of the stair-shaped body 13, a base 0, and prop D, said base and prop being hinged to said body, so as to be capable of being folded thereagainst, as will be seen in Fig. 3, for purposes of packing, storing, transport-ation, &c. step of the stair-shaped body rises above the sides thereof, thus forming guards, whereby when boxes, &c., are supported on the steps they are prevented from slipping forward, owing to the said guards. In the lower part of the prop is a recess F, which is occupied by a tongue G, hinged to said prop, and the lower wall of said recess has a dovetailed groove II to receive a dovetailed tongue J on the rear end of the base 0, it being seen that when the tongue J is in the groove 11 and The forward part E of each the tongue G inserted into the recess F, said tongue Gr fills the portion of the recess above the tongue J and closes against the latter, thus preventing rising of the base. As the base is furthermore locked to the prop by the dovetailed tongue and groove J H, the disconnection of the base and prop is prevented, and thus closing or folding of the stand is prevented. \Vhen the tongue G is thrown out the base may be raised, thus releasing the dovetailed tongue J and permitting the separation of the base andprop and the folding of the same. Depending from the rear of the stand is a leg K, which extends below the base G, and is in the present casea downward prolongation of the prop and abuts against the edge of the top of a counter, table, 850., and may be screwed or otherwise secured thereto, thus preventing displacement or overturning of the stand.

In Figs. 6 and 7-the sides of the body are beveled so as to permit circular or round boxes to be set thereinto, as shown by the dotted lines, Fig. 7. The sides of the body are separated, forming a space through which dirt or dust may drop, and which permits boxes to be seated deeply into the steps when so desired.

Having thus described, my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. A. stand having a body, base, and prop, said base having a locking-tongue and said prop having a recess with iagroove to receive said tongue and carrying a hinged tongue adapted to fit over and lock the tongue of the base in the said recess of the prop, said parts being combined substantially as described.

2. A stand having a base and prop hinged to the body thereof and connected by alocking tongue and groove, and furthermore secured by a removable tongue on the prop, the same engaging with the tongue on the base, substantially as described.

3. In a stand, the prop D, having .a recess F, and a tongue G, adapted to enter the same, in combination with the base 0, having a tongue adapted to interlock with said prop and be controlled by said tongue G, substantially as described.
