SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 462,001, dated October 27, 189.1.

Be it known that we, CHARLES F. FOSTER, JOHN M. FOSTER, and LANeDoN C. FOSTER, of Fulton, in the county of Oswego, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Knife-Sharpeners, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention relates to the class of knife Sharpeners which present two abrading or cutting surfaces at an acute angle to each other to allow the edge of the knife to be drawn across said surfaces at-their point of intersection, and thus become sharpened simultaneously upon both sides of the blade.

The object of our invention is to provide a knife-sharpener especially adapted for use in meat-markets and households and which shall be simple and inexpensive in construction, convenient and efficient in its operation, and have abrading or sharpening bars adj ustably secured to a holder, so that different portions of the abrading or cutting surfaces can be brought into use as others become worn; and to that end the invention consists in the improved construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described, and set forth in the claims.

In the annexed drawings, Figure 1 isa front view of a knife-sharpener embodying ourinvention. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same, and Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the holder of the sharpening-bars.

0 represents a bracket, which constitutes the holder of the abrading or sharpening bars, said bracket being formed with a horizontal plate 0 and legsl Z and Z, by which it is mounted on a bench or other suitable sup-V port, and in order to allow said bracket to be secured stationary in its position we provide the leg Z with aperforated foot Z for the reception of a screw or nail by which to fasten bracket is provided with two sockets or eyes a a, extending from the top to the bottom of said plate and disposed at an angle to each' preferably composed of steel and provided.

with serrated or other suitable abrading or sharpening surfaces. Said bars may be of any suitable shape in cross-section. \Ve prefer, however, to form them cylindrical. They are inserted in the sockets a, in which they fit loosely, so as to allow them to be turned therein and also moved longitudinally and reversed end for end, when desired, to bring different portions of their abrading-surfaces to their adjacent sides, thus allowing new portions of said surfaces to be brought into use after other portions thereof have become worn. Said bars 1) b are retained in their requisite position in the holder C by means of a suitable clamp, for which we prefer to employ a key 0, inserted between the bars I) b beneath the plate 0 of the holder, and in order to permanently attach said key to the holder we form said key of a spring-plate secured at one end to the underside of the plate C and having its free end extending between the bars Z) I) and bearing with its edges against said bars, and thereby sustaining the same, so as to prevent their turning as well as longitudinal movement.

To move and adjust the bars I) b, as here inbefore described, it is only necessary to depress the free end of the spring-key c. The bars being thus liberated from said key can then be turned and moved longitudinally, as may be desired. By releasi ng the key it automatically springs back and re-engages the bars to retain them in their adjusted position.

Having described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A knife-sharpener composed of a holder secured to a suitable support and abrading or sharpening bars disposed at an angle to each other and secured in said position to the aforesaid holder, as set forth.

2. A knife-sharpener consistingof a holder having sockets disposed axially at an angle to each other and abrading or sharpening bars secured longitudinally adjustable to said sockets, as set forth.

3. A knife-sharpenerconsistingof asupportingbracket provided with sockets disposed at an angle to each other and abrading or sharp enin g bars provided with a plurality of abrading-su'rfaces and seated in the sockets adj ustably to present different parts of said surfaces at the adjacent sides of the said bars, as set forth.

4-. The improved knife-sharpener consisting of a supporting-bracket provided with sockets disposed at an angle to each other, sharpening-bars inserted removably in said sockets, and a clamp retaining said bars in the sockets,'as set forth.

5. The combination of a bracket secured stationarily to a suitable support and formed With a horizontal plate having sockets extending from the top to the bottom of said plate and at an angle to each other, sharpening-bars inserted in said sockets, and a key inserted between said bars beneath the plate of the bracket, as set forth.

6. The combination of the bracket 0, formed with the horizontal plate O,havingthe sockets a a extending through said plate at an angle to each other, the sharpening-bars b I), inserted in said sockets, and the spring-key 0, attached at one end to the under side of the plate C and having its free end extending between the harsh b and bearing on the same, substantially as described and shown.

7. The bracket 0, formed With the horizontal plate 0, sockets a a, leg Z, having the perforated foot Z, and legs Z Z, terminating with pointed feet, in combination with the sharpening-bars b b, secured in said sockets, substantially as described and shown.
