M. L. SGHOCH. SPOON. No. 461,623. Patented Oct. 20, 1891.
UNITED STATss PATENT Tricia.
SPOON.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 461,623, dated October 20, 1891.
Application filed December 2'7, 1890- Serial No, 375,983.
To all IIF/HIIH/ (Z nun ,1I'm/warn.-
lie it known that I, )lAltllN L. scnocn, a citizen oi the lnited States, residing at New Berlin, in the county of Union and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in. Spoons; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact: description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which itappertainstomakcand use the same.
My invention relates to spoons and embodies an improvement on Letters Patent No. 439332, granted to me October 28, lSllU.
The object of my present invention is to simplify the C'UllStlllCtlOll, and consequently decrease the cost of manufacture, of the de vice. As set forth in said patent and equally applicable to the improvement herci n de' scribed, the spoon is provided with a rcinow able attachment. by which all substance adhering' to the spoon-bowl may be quickly and easily removed without the use of an additional implement to attain this result; and with this end in view my present improvement consists of the construction and arrangementof parts hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the accompanying drawings similar letters of reference are used to indicate corresponding parts in the several views, and therein- Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a spoon embodying my improvement and show ing the scraper in the act of being moved over the bowl of the spoon. Fig. 2 represents a bottom plan view of the spoon. Fig. 3 repre sents a cross-sectional view of the handle looking in rear of spoondaowl.
Referrin to the drawings, the spoon A may be of usual construction, but, as shown, is more nearly scoop shape, being provided with a bowl or scoop A and a handle A A tube 13 is suspended from the back side of the handlc near the end thereof, said tube being eonstructed from a piece of sheet metal bent into tubular form at its central portion and having side flanges secured to thehandle A or, if de sired, the tube and handle may be made in one piece. Depending from one of the flanges, or thereabont, is a hook to which is movably connected an elastic tension device D, consist (No model.)
ingprcterably, olaronnilrubhorhand. While this hook (f is a substantial and convenient form of attachment, it is obviously apparent thatany well-known mechanical equivalent; may be readily substituted therefor. rod i projects rearwardly from the bowl A and is formed with a kn tickle or bend E, which extends beyond the edge of the handle to form a finger-piece. At apointahcadofsaid knuckle or bend i l the said rod is also formed with an upward bend E to which the elastic ten sion device may be connected, if desired. To construct this bend E" without detracting" from the utility of the rod, said rod is gradually inclined downward, as at 1 from the rear end of: the bowl. A. The said rod terminates in a straight portion it, which is freely mounted in the tube ll, and as said rod is impelled forward and retracted the said portion E thereof has a continuous bearing in said tube.
lo regulate the distance of forward movement of the rod 1 1, a projection or stop F is secured to the handle A at a predetermined distance and against which the knuckle or bend E is adapted to strike.
The front portion of the handle A and the rear portion of thebowl orscoop A are formed with a slot (l, through which the rod E has movement, and said slot is lengthened downward into back of bowl, so that after detaclr ing the elastic tension device I) from the rod E the said rod maybe drawn therethrough and be thus removed from the spoon.
The front end of the rod E is bent downward and secured to the rear side of a scraper ll, which fits closely in the spoon-bowl A, and has a lower bent edge H to closely lit the bottom of said spoon-bowl to thereby entirely discharge any or all material sticking to this portion of the bowl. It will be seen that when the rod E is drawn through slot G, as heretofore referred to, it also removes the scraper II from the spoon-bowl, thereby entirely disconnecting the attachment from the spoon.
The scraper 11 is intended to lie flat against the back of the spoon-bowl A and be fast ened to rod E in such manner as to fit closely between the top of the slot (i and the bottom of thebowl. Asthe red I", is inclined orbent downward, as at it", it stands on alinosta parallel line with the bottom of the bowl, and thereby the scraper II will be kept pressed against said bottom of the'bowl by the pressure exerted on the rod l l as it moves throuuh the portion of the slot (lin the handle A.
It will be understood that in removing the rod and scraper from the spoon, after detachment of the tension device vl),thek1n1cklo or bend E of said rod may be pressed over the projection or stop 1*.
In operation the rod and scraper are pushed forward by hand and retracted by the ten sion device 1), and the parts are so adjusted that the scraper will move over the entire surface of bowl or scoop A and yet be prevented froin extending beyond the end of said scoop or bowl by the projection or stop F be ing engaged by the knuckle or bend E of the rod E.
The removability of the attachment from the spoon so readily and easily in the manner hereinbefore set forth adapts it to be used as a common spoon, even for liquids, as the slot G does not extend lower down than the top of the sides of the bowl. The simplified form of construction also renders the device more durable.
The device is adapted for use in connection with any material, but is more especially intended for lifting or otherwise handling icecream and substances of a similar natn re.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l, in a spoon, the combination, with the bowl slotted at its rear end, of the handle slotted at ils forward end, a tube secured to the under face of the handle near its rear end, the movable scraper arranged in the bowl, and the rod attached thereto, passing, through the slots in the bowl and handle and working beneath said. handle, the rear end of the rod workil'ig in the tube, said rod being formed with a laterally-pro}eeting extension interxne diate its ends, said extension projecting, beyond the sides of the handle, substantially as shown and described.
2. In a spoon, the combination, with the siotted bowl and handle, of the tube secured beneath the rear end of the handle, the pin secured thereto, the stop-pin secured to the under side of handle near the forward end, the movable scraper, and the operating-rod working through the slots beneath the bandle and in the tube, said rod being provided with a lateral extension and an elastic connecting device connecting the rod and pin on the tube, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I aliix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
MARTIN L. SCHOCH.
