SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 461,225, dated October 13, 1891.

To all whom it' may concern:

Be it known that I, NILs VILN, master builder, a subject of the King of Sweden, residing at Gothenburg, in the Kingdom of Sweden, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ohairs; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompan-yin g drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

The invention has for its object to provide a chair in which the seat may be turned up against the chair-back without efiort, so that the occupant on rising may stand inside of the chair-france and leave the passage between two rows of chairs clear.

The invention is more particularly applicable to chairs for theaters and other public places where it is desirable to provide seats for as many persons as possible on a given floor-space.

The invention consists, essentially, in a chair-seat provided with rolling bearings, in combination with a chair-iframe provided with a track extending along the sides and back of the frame.

The invention further consists in details of Construction and in combinations of parts, as will now be fully described, reference being had to the accompanyingdrawings,in which- Figure l is a vertical section taken on or about on line ab ofFig. 3 of a chair embodying my inprovenents, the seat being shown' in its normal position Fig. 2 is a like View showing the seat when pushed up along the chair-back. Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the chair. Fig. 4: shows the roller-brackets by a face View and side elevation, respectively.

Similar letters indicate like parts wherever such may occur in the figures of drawings.

A, A', A B, and C indicate the chair-iframe provided with* a track com-posed of 'two rails D, that extend along the sides A and the standards A of the back of the chair-france.

E is the seat that has secured to its under side near each corner a bracket F, in which is journaled a roller F', resting on the trackrails D, which at their forward end are bent I upwardly, as shown at d, Fi-gs. 1 and 2, to

form a stop for the front rollers and prevent the seat from sliding off the' rails. The seat D has also on its under side along its rear edge a stop-shoulder G, that engages the cross tie or bar B of the chair-iframe to prevent the seat from noving over the bent end of the rails under notioninparted to it by its occupant or by its momentum when moved along the rail D into a nearly upright position and released.

It will be readily seen that it is not necesi sary to use the hands to push the seat out ot' the way. A person standing in front of the seat nay push it back out of the way by pressure of the legs, which is a great convenienceinallowinga person to pass between two rows of seats, as those already seated need not, after rising, turn around for the purpose of turning up their seats to clear the space between the sidesAof the chair-frame, as is the case in chairs in which .the seats are hinged or journaled to their frames.

To avoid 'obstructing the passage between the rows of seats durn g the circulation of the public, I provide such seats with the hook H, so that they may be hooked to the upper cross-rail C of the chair-back, as shown in dotted'lines in Fig. 1.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new therein, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A chair-seat provided with rolling bearings, in combination with a chair-frame open in the front and provided with a track extending along the sides and back of the chair, for the purpose set forth.

2. A chair-seat provided with rolling bearings, in combination with a chair-france open in the front and provided with a track extending along the sides and back of the chair, the rails of said track having their front ends bent upwardly, for the purpose set forth.

A chair-seat provided with rolling bearings and withastop-shoulder at its rear edge, in combination with a chair-frame open in the front and provided with a track extending 'along the sides and back of the chair and with an abutment near said back adapted to engage the stop-shoulder on the seat, for the purpose sctforth.
