UNITED STATES PATENT OEE-ICE.`
A HORACE PETER RICHARDS, OF WEST PITTSTON, PENNSYLVANIA.
VEHICLE- POLE TIP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 461,163, dated October 13, 1891. Application led February 5, 1891. Serial No. 380,364. (No model.)
T0 a/ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, HORACE PETER RICH- ARDS, a citizen of the United States, residing at l/Vest Pittston, in the county of Luzerne and State ot` Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pole- Tips; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to that class of inventions which are designated as pole-tips, and hasfor its object, in common with such devices, to prevent the neck-yoke from slipping off the pole.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a pole-tip which can be cheaply constructed and which will be simple, efficient,
and durable. A
The improvement consists of a thimble, sheath, ortube constructed with a tlange, which is arranged obliquely thereto and strengthened by an annular flaring brace,a latch pivoted within the thimble midway between the top and the bottom sides thereof and having its rear end terminating` in or provided with a head which is projected through an opening in the bottom side ot' the thimble, and a spring to press down on the latch, the spring being inserted to place through an opening in the head ot' the latch, whichopening is closed by a screw-plug which is adjustable to vary the tension of the spring and which can be removed to permit access to the said spring, all as hereinafterwill be more fully described and claimed, and shown in the annexed drawings, in which-4 Figure l is a side view of a pole-tip embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical Fig. 3
longitudinal sectionof the invention.
is a bottom plan view of the device.
The thimble or sheath A is slightly tapering in form and is adapted to be secured on the end of the pole in the usual manner, and is provided between its ends wit-h the eccentric and oblique flange B, which is strengthened by the flaring annular brace C. The latch D is pivoted near the front end of the thimble or sheath midway between the top and the bottom sides thereof, and its rear end is provided with the head d, which projects through the opening a, in the bottom side of the thimble. The spring F, which bears on the latch and holds the head d thereof projected through the opening a, is a coil and is'inserted to place in the sheath or thiinble through the internally-threaded opening g, v
which extends through the head d. The screwplug G closes the opening g and forms a support for the spring F. Obviously by adjusting the screw-plug the tension on the spring F can be increased or diminished, and by removing the said plug the spring F can be withdrawn from the opening g for repairs'or to be replaced by a new spring. The lower end of the spring F, being iitted in the opening g, is retained in place thereby.
Having thus described Amy invention, what as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HORACE PETER RICHARDS. Witnesses: Jos. W. KASPER,
EDWIN FELTs.-
