Description
(No Model.)
0. M. BUGKINGHAM. BUTTER PRINTER.
No. 460,943. Patented Oct. 13, 1891.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CASSIUS M. BUCKINGHAM, OF UTICA, NEV YORK, ASSIGNOR- OF ONE-HALF TO FRANK L. JONES, OF SAME PLACE.
BUTTER-PRINTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 460,943, dated October 13, 1891.
Application filed June 1, 1891. Serial No. 394,679. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CASSIUS M. BUCK'ING- HAM, of Utica, in the county of Oneida and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Butter- Printers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which Will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in butter-printing devices.
In the drawings which accompany and form part of this specification, and in which similar figures of reference refer to corre sponding parts in the several views, Figure 1 shows a top view of myimproved butter-printing device. Fig. 2 shows a side elevation of thesame. Fig.3showsan end elevation. Fig. 4 shows the mold open. Figs. 5 to 8, inclusive, show details of construction on an enlarged scale.
Referring more specifically to the referencenumerals marked on the drawings, in a more particular description of the device, 1 indicates the mold or form used in my butterprinting device, which is provided with a hinged side 2, a hinged end 3, and fixed side 1:, and a fixed end 5. The movable side and end are provided with suitable hooks or socuring devices for securing the side and end of the mold in closed position. On either side of the mold is provided a rack 6, having a series or row of teeth 7,and a plain track 8. The rack 6 is provided with downwardlyprojecting slotted lugs 9, through which engage set-screws 10 for ad j nstably securing the rack to the side of the mold. Extending across the mold is a printing-roller 11, having suitable configurations for printing or stamping the butter and edges or rims, as 12, for marking the butter into separate cakes or prints.
, On either end of the roller or shaft thereof roller engages, and two anti-friction rollers or pulleys 15, adapted to run on the upper side of track 8, and one anti-friction rolleror pulley 10 in a vertical line midway between the rollers 15 and adapted to run on the under side of track 8. On either end of the printing-roller is provided a rim 18, adapted to run or cut closely inside of the sides of the mold, as will be understood from Fig. 7. It will also be noticed that there is a c0nsiderable space between the shaft on which the roller mounted and the edge of the side, so that a considerable vertical adjustment of the roller with reference to the mold is permitted. The roller is provided with an operating-crank 17, secured to one end thereof.
The operation of the device is substantially as follows: The mold being in closed position, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and filled with but.- ter, the printing-roller, with its cog-gears, is engaged at one end of the box or mold in the racks and, being rotated by means of crank 17, caused to pass from one end of the box to the other, where it maybe removed, having impressed and divided the surface of the butter into prints. The movable side and end of the box may then be let down and the prints separated by a butter-spade and removed. The thickness of the prints may be changed by loosening the set-screws 10 on each side of the case and adjusting the racks up or down.
I am aware that butter-workers with a table having sides, and a working-roller spanning the table, having gears engaging in racks on either side, have been heretofore provided, and I do not claim that construction, the object of my invention being to print or mold the butter after it has been worked in the usual manner in a butter-worker.
\Vhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The herein-described butter-printing device having a mold with movable or hinged side and end, a printing-roller spanning the mold, vertically-adjustable racks and tracks on either side of the box, cog-gears at either end of the roller engaging the racks. and the retaining-carriage having two wheels on the upper side and at each side of the vertical line through the roller, adapted to run on the track, and a single roller in the vertical line through the shaft, adapted to run on the under side of the track, substantially as set forth.
2. The herein-described butter-printing device having a mold with a hinged side and end, a configured printing-roller having edges for dividing or marking the division in the surface of the butter, vertically-adj ustable racks 6 on either side of the mold, having cogteeth 7 and plain track 8, cog-gears on either end of the roller adapted to engage in the teeth of the racks, and retaining-carriage 14, having rollers 15 15 on either side of a vertical line through the shaft, adapted to engage on the upper surfaces of track 8, and a roller 16 in the vertical line of the shaft, adapted to engage on the under side of track 8, substantially as set forth.
The herein-described butter-printin g device having a mold with hinged side and end, the rack 6 on either side of the mold, vertiroller 16, adapted to engage on the under side of track 8, and operating-crank 17, all combined as set forth.
In witness whereof I have affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
