WlRE-FENCE-STAY FASTENING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 460,913, dated October 6, 1891. Application filed June 9,1891- Serial No. 395,633. (No model.)
To a whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SYLvEsrER EBERLY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ottokee, in the county of Fulton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in \Vire-FenceStay Fastenings; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appcrtains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to wire fences, and chiefly to the means for fastening the wire stays to the fence-wires.
The improvement consists of the novel features and the peculiar construction and combination of the parts which will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and which are shown in the annexed drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side view of a fence embodying my invention Fig. 2 is a detail view showing the fastening-plate mounted on the fence-wire. Fig. 3 is a front view of a crossing of the stay and fence wires, showing the application of the invention. Fig. 4 1s aperspcctive view of the parts shown in Fig. 3.
The fastening-plate C is provided with the slots a and Z), which extend at about right angles to. each other and cross midway of their ends, forming the four wings 6. These fasteningzplates will be of proper size, and the slot 5 will be just wide enough to receive the fence-wire and the slot to equal in width to the gage of the stay-wire. The fasteningplate will be deflected between its ends on a line corresponding with the position of the slot a.
The fence is constructed in the usual manner, being composed of posts E and the iongitudinal wires A. At the place where t is desired to locate the stay-wire a fastenlngplate C is placed on the top fence-wire, as shown in Fig. 2, the wire A entering the slot 2). The stay-wire B is slipped down between the fence-wire and the angle formed between and the latter struck one or more blows on the opposite side, or by a clamp, the plate be ing compressed between the jaws of the clamp. The straightening of the plate erimps the stay-wire about the fence-wire, as most clearly shown in Fig. 4, and causes the wings e to bind on the sides of the stay and fence wires, as shown most clearly in Figs. 3 and 4 It will be observed that the Wings 6 fill the angular space between the fence and the stay-wires and bear against the wires close in the angles, thereby preventing any possible movement.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination,with a fence-wire and a stay-wire, of a fasteningplate having slots a and b, which slots cross midway of their ends and form the four separate and independent wings e, the latter binding at their inner edges against the sides of the said wires, substantially as described.
2. A fastening-plate for the purpose described, haviugslots a and b,which cross midway of their ends, and having the four wings e separate and independent, the plate being deflected between its ends on a line correspondingwith the position of one of the said slots, substantially as described, for the purpose set forth.
