WITNESSES: INVENTOR 'wm J5me: 620w! fly). ATTORNEY.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES E. STOUT, OF SCOTT CITY, KANSAS.
SPlKE-EXTRACTO R.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 460,897, dated October 6, 1891.
Application filed April 29, 1891. Serial No. 390,931. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES E. STOUT, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Scott City, in the county of Scott and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spike-Extractors; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of this invention and is a side View. Figs. 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7 are perspective views of the different parts.
The invention herein described has reference to an attachment for the claw-bars used by all railroad companies for raising the spikes out from cross-ties that hold the steel or iron rails in place, and for other purposes.
In the accompanying drawings illustrating the invention, the letter A designates an ordinary claw-bar, turned at one end to form the claws a.
B is a link or hanger, held in place on the front side of the bar by a clamp or stirrup b, and which at the lower end is connected by a bolt to parallel links 0, the lower portions of which are pivotally connected to a heel or fulcrum piece D. Said bolt passes loosely through an eye formed on the lower portion of said hanger. The upper portion of the links are slotted to receive the bolt 0, said slot being of oblong, form to allow the movement of the bolt therein and permit the adjustment of the parts. The heel or fulcrum D is slightly hollowed or curved on its front face, as at f, to form a bearing for the rounded lower portion h of the bar A.
This attachment can be readily clamped in place or detached from the bar.
By the arrangement shown the heel D serves both as the fulcrum and as the support, forming a simple device, and yet one by which a powerful gripping-leverage and lifting-force is obtained.
Having described this invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
1. The detachable attachment for claw-bars, comprising the fulcrum or heel having a concave bearing-surface, the parallel links connected at one end to said heel and adapted to receive the claw-bar between them, the hanger having the loop or eye at its lower portion and connected to the opposite ends of said links by a bolt passing loosely therethrough and through oblong slots in said links, and means for securing said hanger to a bar, substantially as specified.
2. A spike-extractor comprising the bar or handle having the rigid claw-head thereon, the heel or fulcrum forming a bearing for the lower portion of said bar, the parallel links connected at one end to said heel and provided with oblong slots near their opposite ends, a hanger secured to said bar and provided with an eye at its lower portion, and a bolt loosely engaging said eye and passing through said oblong slots, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
