Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
G. F. J. COLBURN, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
IMPROVEMENT IN COMBS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, G. F. J. COLBURN, ot' Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented anew and useful Improvement in Combs; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof', which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying,- drawings, forming` part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of this invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
This invention consists in the application to a comb ot' a. metallic back provided at one end with a socket to receive a lip projecting from one end of the comb, and the opposite end with a clampingscrew, or any other suitable fastening, in such a manner that the comb can be readily inserted into the metal back and removed therefrom if it should be broken or injured, and by the back the comb is strengthened in the same measure, or nearly so, as it is by a metallic back permanently applied to it in the usual manner.
The invention consists also in combining the metallic back with a case or'handle of similar or other material, so that a joint is formed partially by said back and partially by the case or handle, and a strong and durable pocket-comb is obtained.
It consists, nally, in the application to a comb of a rule, so that a convenient pocketrule is combined with the comb.
A represents a comb, of india-rubber or any other suitable material, which is provided with a metallic back, B. This back, instead of being trmly secured toit, is attached by means of a socket, a, which catches over the lip b at the end ot the comb, and by a clampscrew, c, which passes through the back, and by compressing its two jaws confines the comb in its place; or if desired, a piece, d, may be placed between the two jaws of the back, and this piece is provided with a shoulder, a', to catch over a lip, b', on the end of the comb, as shown in Fig. 2. The comb can thus be readily removed and replaced or changed, if necessary or desirable. One end of the metal back B is connected to the case or handle C by means ot the` screws c, so that the comb can be folded or unfolded at pleasure.
The metal back, which strengthens the comb and forms one half, and the case or handle the other halt', ot" the joint, and when folded, the comb is protected by said case or handle, and it can be readily and conveniently carried in the pocket.
Thecase or handle may be made of metal or any other suitable material in any suitable form or shape, but it ought not to be made much if any longer than the comb, so that the Y whole, when folded, will not take up much room. V
The metallic back of the comb, and also one edge ot' the case or handle, may be marked with a rule, so that the implement serves the double purpose ot' a pocket comb and rule.
Having' thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. The combination of a movable metallic back with a comb substantially as described, so that the comb can vbe readily taken out and replaced without injury to the said back.
2. The use ot' a socket in one end of the metal back ot' a comb, in combination with a lip projecting from the end ot' the same, and with a clamp screw or other suitable fastening at the opposite end, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
3. The combination ot" the metallic back of a comb with a handle or case otl similar 1n iterial,`and fitting the same together, substantially as and for the purpose described.
4. So constructing a comb that the comb part proper and the back may be readily detached, substantially as described.
" Gr. F. J. OOLBURN.
