A LIPTING JACK. y No. 460,760. Patented 0ct.6,1891.
milllili E I e e NIW l wmnrununggmmi@ 0 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ANSELL P. ROUTT, OF RICHMOND, VIRGINIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO J. I-I. BROWN, OF SAME PLACE.
Ll FTI NG-JAC K.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 460,760, dated October 6, 1891.
Application tiled July 28, 1891. Serial No. 4001934. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern:
De it known that I, ANSELL P. ROUTT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Richmond, in the county of Henrico and State of Virginia, have invented a newand useful Lifting-Jack, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to lever lifting-jacks, and has for its object to provide a device of this character which will be simple in construction, cheap, and durable, and at the same time to provide a jack which will allow for a variety of adjustments and in which a powerful leverage is obtained with but a small eX- penditu re ot' power; and with these objects in View the invention consists in an operatinglever pivotally mounted upon an adjustable fulcruin-block and provided with special details of construction, hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a side elevation of a lifting-jack constructed in accordance with my invention, the operating-lever being in its uppermost position. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the same, showing the lever in its lowermost position.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, A represents the main operating-lever, constructed of suitable material and terminating at its outer end in a handle portion a, by means of which the llever may be easily grasped and operated. The said lever is providedalong its upper edge with a series ofnotches a and near its outer end with a series of perforations a2. A tulcrum-block B, constructed of any desirable material and in any desired shape to form a rest adapted to be seated upon the ground, is adj ustably secured to the said operating-leverl by means of the pivot-bolt b, engaging any one of the series of perforations a2 in the outer end of said lever, by means of which adjustment any amount of leverage may be obtained, as desired.l Pivotally secured to the extreme outer end of the operating-lever A, upon the pivot-bolt C, is the supporting post or block D which is provided on opposite edges with a series of alternately-arran ged en gagin g-shoulders d, that are adapted to engage the object to be hoisted, by means of which a variety of adjustments maybe readily obtained. A regulating-pawl E is pivoted upon the bolt e to one side of said supporting post or block D and is adapted to engage any one of the series of notches c,located on the upper edge of said operatinglever to obtain, as desired, the height at which the object may be required to be raised.
The construction and operation of my improved lifting-jack are now thought to be apparent. After the shoulders of the supporting post or block have engaged the object to be raised by slightly bearing upon the lever the said post or block is inclined slightly back, which throws the weight over the point of fulcrum, and thus holds the object stationary in its elevated position. Various heights may be obtained by throwing the operatinglever down, in order that the regulating-pawl may enga-ge any one of the series of notches, as described, while at the same time various heights of objects are accommodated by the alternate series of engaging-shoulders on opposite'sides of said supporting post or block, which may be utilized on either side,as may be desired and as can be readily seen.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
l. In a lifting-jack, an operating-lever provided with a series o f notches, a fulcrumblock pivotally secured to said lever, a pivoted supporting-post secured to the end ot` said lever, and a regulating-pawl pivoted to said post and adapted to engage the notches of said lever, substantially as set forth.
2. In a lifting-jack, an adjustable fulcru mblock, a lever provided with a series of perforations and notches, a supporting-post pivoted to the operating-lever beyond the point of fulcrum and provided with the opposite alternately-arranged series of engagingshoulders, and a regulatingpawl pivoted to said post and adapted to engage the notches of said lever, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto aiiixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
