DEVICE FOR BLOCKING OFF ART-lFlClAL-STONE PAVEMENTS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 460,644, dated October 6, 1891.

Be it known that I, MARTIN MAURER, of the city of St. Louis and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Blocking OH Articial-Stone Pavements, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.

My invention relates to improvements in devices or tools for blocking oft' artificial-stone pavements; and it consists in the novel arrangement and combination of parts, as will be more fully hereinafter described, and designated in the claim.

In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective View of my complete invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same, and Fig. 3 is a horizontal cross-section taken on the line a; of Fig. 2.

The object of my invention is to construct a tool simple in operation and inexpensive in cost for grooving and laying off blocks in artificial-stone pavements.

I will further describe the use and advantages of the same in connection with a description of the mechanical parts embodied in my invention.

Referring to the drawings, l indicates the smoothing-plate, which is made of cast-iron or any other suitable material. Said plate is provided with uptu rned rounded ends 2,Which permits the plate to freely slide when in use over the pavement. Said plate is also provided on its lower surface in the region of its center with a longitudinal rib or projection 3, the same being provided with upturned or rounded ends 4, so as to freely move when the tool is in use over the pavement. 7 indicates Wrought-iron pieces, to which the handle 8 is secured, as illustrated in the drawings. Said wrought-iron pieces 7 are molded in and secured to the smoothing-plate l simultaneously with casting the same.

The handle 8 is secured to WroughtLiron pieces 7 by means of screws 9, as illustrated in the drawings.

It can be readily'perceived from the brief description, as herein contained, that by the use of this tool the artificial-stone pavement may be grooved and blocked oft' in any manner, as desired.

Having fully described my invention,what I claim is- The herein-described tool for blocking off articialstone pavements, having a smoothing-plate l with upturned rounded ends 2, the same being provided centrally with a rib 3, provided with rounded ends 4, a supplemental rib 5, provided with rounded ends 6,composed of hardened steel and of less length than said first-mentioned rib, the same being secured to rib 3, pieces 7, of the character described, and a handle 8, secured to said pieces for manipulating said tool, substantially as set forth.
