UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
N EIVELL SANDERS AND J UDSON BUCHANAN, OF OIIATTANOOGA, TENNESSEE, ASSIGNORS TO THE OI-IATTANOOGA PLOW COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
SIDE-HILL PLow.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 460,404, dated September 29, 1891. Application filed June 8,1891. Serial No. 395,557. (No model.)
T on whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that we, NEWELL SANDERs and J UD'SON BUCHANAN, citizens of the United States of America, residing at Chattanooga, in the county of Hamilton and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Side-Hill Plows, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to plows of that class IO used upon hillsides and in which the plow proper has a pivoted connection with the standard and is adapted to be reversed to enable the plow to be used back and forth, throwing the furrowin the same direction. Our invention consists, particularly, in an improved latch held under spring-tension for holding the share and mold-board to the standard. v
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a rear View of the plow and standard; Fig. 2,
a bottom view of the same.
In the drawings, the plowshare and moldboard are of the ordinary construction and are.
pivoted to the standard in any suitable man- 2 5 ner, preferably by projections and sockets, as
at a and b. The connection between the stan dard and the rear part of the plow proper is by means of a triangular brace A, which is bolted to the frame of the plow by means of 0 a bolt d. This brace carries the latch which holds the plow proper to the standard. This latch is pivoted to the brace, and its ends on each side are made symmetrical, its free end being provided with a projection at the ex 3 5 treme end engaging a socket or recess formed in a projection extending rearwardly from the standard, as at h, and the latch is kept in engagement Withthis recess by means of the tension of the spring dfiwhich is in the form of a simple bar having one end fitting a recess in the frame of the plow, while the free end extends through a slot in the central upper edge of the brace A, as at e, the projecting end of the said spring-bar engaging a de- 5 pression formed in the rear end of the latch, as at 2'. One of these recesses is formed upon each side of the rear end of the latch, and when the spring is in one or the other, according to the side of the standard on which the plow proper happens to be, the tension will maintain the latch in horizontal position and in engagement by means of the projection on its free end with the socket or recess in the plow-standard, as shown in Fig. 1. Between the recesses or depressions in the rear end of the latch there is a raised portion f, which acts as a cam to lift the spring-rod when it is desired to reverse the plow, and this action is secured and the tension of the spring overcome by the operator placing the foot upon a foot-plate 6, extending to the rear from the front portion of the latch, which not only disengages the latch from'the standard, but lifts the spring out of its recess across the raised part f until the recess or depression on the other side comes in line with the spring, which it enters and thus holds the latch in position to automatically engage the notch in the standard when the parts are reversed in position.
We claim as our invention 1. In combination with the standard having a recess in its rear part, a plowshare and mold-board, a connecting-brace between the plow and standard, a latch pivoted to said brace so as to swing vertically, a hook at one end engaging the recess in the standard, and a spring engaging the periphery of the other end, substantially as described.
2. In combination with the standard hav- 8o ing a recess in its rear part, a plowshare and mold-board pivoted thereto, a connectingbrace between the plow and standard, a latch pivoted to swing verticallyon said brace, one end being approximately T-shaped, providing hooks to engage the recess, the opposite end being cam-shaped, and a spring in contact with the periphery of the cam-shaped end, substantially as described.
In combination with the standard havo ing a recess in its rearpart, areversible share and mold-board, a connecting-brace, a pivoted latch carried by said brace and having a hooked end engaging the recess, and a footplate extending from the rear face of the 5 latch, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof we affix oursignatu res in presence of two witnesses.
