Too/ZZ whom t may concern:
y 'Be it4 known that LWinnonn H. HoLs- CLAW, of Louisville, in theeounty of .letterson and State of Kentucky, have invented a new' and useful Improvement in Flows; and.
' I do hereby declare that the following.r is a As is Well knownto'those skilled in the art of making plows and familiar with the use of iliade separatelyflroinand sometimes integral "with the standa'r'dlis-fsuhjected to great Wear attire hcel'.
coniefworudowii materially the handlino` ori r'niianagem'ent' of-therplc-W becomes difficult; andIgoodor perfect `Worin-cannot he dono Q withfit.
dpwhen the heel shall have befVarious kconstruotions" have been used and patented designed to render ploWs capable of satisfactory operation, even after the heel of the landside shall have becouiepartia'lly'- worn or rounded oil, Vin `s onie ot" which constructions lthe -entirebottom portion ot' the l llandside has been made vertically adjust able and in others of which a2 short adjust' vableheel-piece hasbeen employed.. I pro- ..35
pose to proyide for use a plow of; the last named type or species which shall, however, be capable 'of somewhat better. action and be more desirable in practical operation than those of this type which have heretofore'heen made; and to this main end and object my in vention. may loe said'to consist in .the novel combinations of devices which will be found hereinafter more fully described, and which will be more particularly pointedout and clearly defined in the claims of this-specification. y l
'loenable thosesliilled in the art to 'make and use plows containing my improvement, l" will nonY proceed to more iullyjexplain the lat-ter, referring by letters to'the accompany. `ing drawings, which for-ins part oftl'xis speci` looking at thc inner side of said part.
catioinand in which l have shownn'iy in- Vention carried outl in the precise Forni in which l have so far practiced it.
In the drawings, Figure l is an :elevation ot' the -landsidc portion of a plow of Vmodern and approved pattern, lookingat the outer side of said portion. Fig. 2 is a similar View Fig. S is a bottom View of the devices seen at -Figs. l and 2. Fig. -l is a detail sectional View at the line of Fig. l.
ln the several '[igures the same part will be found always designated by the saine reference-letter, and at Figs. l and *l l have illustrated the adjustability of the supplemental heel-piece by showing it ser in a lowered po ksition in dotted lines.
A is the landside proper, made of chilled castfiron, and ll is a supplemental rear portion or heelspiece that is constructed and arthe part A, asl will now explain.
angles to the main or body portion of the device. This flange-like portion b constitutes the bottom or ground bearing portion and corresponds, it Will be seen, in Width with the -width of the bottom flange (t of the landsiue A of the plow and constitutes (when the heelpiece B is in place) a continuation. rear' Wardly of said iiange a, 'the two lh-mge-like parts a and l) forming the bottom of the land side as a whole, The landsideA is cast with a depression or recess in its outer surface, within which is fitted and placed thc main Vert-ical or body portion of the hee'hpiece l5, l
asshown, (see Fig, 1,) and when these two parts are assembled, the outer surface of the piece B lies in precisely the same plane as the outer surface of the landside A, so that lthe appearance and effect are the saine as those of the usual cast landside made without my improvement.
As clearly shown at Fig. l, the'forwardeml of the heel-piece B has a semicircuiarprojection that tits into and works against the corsion VYoli the part A, that accommodates said rolo piece B, and as will b seen by reference to l 1 '4, the eorrespondiugly-shapedsemicireular parts of thel piet-,cs A and H, are thereby f locked together -in a direction transverse to the plane of the landside, while at the same.
piece B and the under cut or beveled engaging selnicireular portions of said piece and the landside, -(see Fig; 4,) the heelpiece is securely .held in place, and by loosening and retighte'ningsaid bolt and nut the heel-'piece may bevibrated at its` rear end, turning on an imaginary axis coincident withthe center of the s'e-micirele portions referred to. The oblong aperture (l is made'in the direction of a circular curve, the centerof which coincides with the center of the said sem ieircular curves at the forward end of the piece Band the recess in part A, and hence whilethe heel-piece may be vibrated n p anddown at its rear end, (as indicated by the dotted lines at Figs. l and 2,) it 'is held in engagement at its for ward end with the recessed landside, and turns onan imaginary axis without the presence 'of any separate pivot or pivotal part. lt will beobserved that when the heel-piece is. in its highermost position, shown bythe full lines iii" the drawings,"there is a slight opening or space between itand thelandside atv the point marked/1n (see Figs. l and which slightly breaks the continuity of the bottom su rface of the landside; but this small open. space loes'not injuriously aectthe working of the plow, and is necessary, it will be seen,to permit the heel-piece to be .moved down "in the direction and manner illustrated by the dotted' lines, as the bottom of this, so -to speak, adjustable portion ofthe lar idev bottom wears away.
Frein the foregoing description, read connection with the drawings, it will be easily understood that in the use of a plow made as shown, all that the farmerllas to do to keep the plow in perfect workin g orderis to periodically adjust the vibrating device B as "i'ast as the heel 0f the plow wears away materially, so as to always maintain a rear bottom portion at the vici nity of the heel-that is, substantially fore set forth.
in 1i n e with the fo rwardperman ent( an i mino vi i able) bottom ortitm of ,thelandside and that whenever the bottompart or tiange-lilger por- 6o tion bot' the device lshall have becomeworn out all he has to ydois ,to replace the old heel-y pieee B with a new Veine at a very tritling-exfpense. Of course all' the plows madeof an y given size and pattern will be duplicates, as 65 to the recessed landsides and heel-pieces', so that a new VheeLpieee ordered of the mannfaetu rer will fit to any y low (of the richt num# ber. or pattern) made by hini.l
In the plow illustrated in the drawings, in 7o which the length of they b ottonrof thelandside A 'is about 'twenty-'one inchesI make the extreme length of the piece Babout nine inches, which divides the bottom of the land! side .into two'parts, one of about'thirteen 75 inches, integral with the part A, and one nearly eight inches, integral with the adjustable piece B. In the 'case shown the heightjof x the piece B is about two inches, which is verv nearly halfl the entire height of the rearward Siti main portion of the whole landside.
vThe .proportions shown I have found dc.
sii-able and proper; but they may, of course, be varied more er Vless without materially 'changing the 'construction shown. 8
That I claim as-new, anddesire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The co1nbination,lwit.h the landside-A east or otherwise formed with a depression inv its outer face andfwith a bottom ange ex,- gol tending back to the vicinity of the forward part of said recess, ef a vibratile heel-piece I3, provided with a bottom flange, subst-an`- tiallysuch as speeied, and means for adjustably securing said heel-piece in place at` the vicinity of. itsrearward-end, all substan-l tially in the manner and for' the purposes hereinbetore setforth.
2.- The combination, with the landsideA formed with a recesswhich has the wall at roo its forward end both curved and undercut,
as sp.eciiied,of a heel-pieceB, arranged and l iittedwithin said recess, and means foradf' justably securing the rear portion of said, l heel-piece tothe' landside A at any desired 105 peint ofadjustment of the former, allv snbstanti'ally as and for the purposes hereinbea' 'In witness whereof I have hereunto set my y hand this 21st day of hiarehylfll. y
W'ILFORD Il. HOLSQLAW. In presence of-e i SAML. IInNDnssoN, Jr., En. B. GARNR.
