f 96nd UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH B. PEDRIOK, OF COLUMBUS, INDIANA.
CORN-PLANTER ATTACHMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 460,159, dated September 29, 1891.
Application filed July 20, 1891. Serial No.400,036. (No model.) i
To all whom it may concern;-
1% it known that I, JOSEPH B. PEDEIOK, a citizen of the United States, residing at O0- lumbus, in the county of Bartholomew and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Corn-PlanterAttachments, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvementin an attachment to the furrow-runner of a cornplauter for the purpose of scraping away the surface-soil on each side of the furrow, for which Letters Patent No. 333,5 l1 were issued to me January 5, 1886. Said attachment consists in a pair of diverging plates united at their forward ends and secured to the runner and extending beyondthe rear end there of, so as to form a wider second furrow above that in which the corn is to be dropped.
The object of my present improvement is to provide improved means for securing to the runner the plates which form the second furrow.
The accompanying drawings illustrate my invention.
Figure 1 is a plan showing the attachment in position on the furrow-runner. Fig. 2 represents a side elevation of the same, having one of the plates removed. Fig. 3 represents an elevation of the inner side of one of the attached scrapenplates. Fig. 4 is a rear'elevation.
In the drawings, A designates a casting, having on its under side alongitudinal groove 13, which fits over the back edge of the furrowrunner O of a corn-planter. Extending radially from the part A are a pair of radial arms D D, each having in its outer face a broad vertical groove E, having a serrated surface F. The central part A and arms D constitute a saddle, which is secured to the furrowrunner in a fixed position by a set-screw G.
H H are a pair of thin steel plates slightly curved longitudinally, and each having secured to its convex side, near one end, a raised plate I, having a serrated surface J, corresponding to the serrated surface F, and a central vertical slot K, the sides of which are undercut, so as to receive and retain the head of a bolt L, which passes through the arm D. Plates H H are each secured to the saddle A by means of the bolt L and the interlocking serrations F and J, so as to be vertically adjustable relatively to the runner. By this construction the saddle or body of the device may be secured to the furrow-runner in a fixed position, and the plates H H may be quickly adjusted, so as to leave the furrow of a greater or less depth Without disturbing the position of the saddle.
I claim as my inventiou- The above-described corn-planter attachment, consisting of the saddle having in its under side a central groove adapted to embrace the upper edge of a corn-planter runner, and the radial arms D D, said arms being each provided with a groove E, serrated surface F, and bolt L, and the plates 11 H, each provided with a serrated plate I, having the undercut slot K, all combined and arranged to co-operate with each other and with the furrow-runner of a corn-planter, substantially as specified.
JOSEPH B. PEDRICK.
