ATTORNEY.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CALVIN H. NORRIS, OF CANTON, OHIO, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO GEORGE F. KNIGHT, OF SAME PLACE.
T U Y E R E SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 460,060, dated September 22, 1891.
I Application filed December 5, 1890. Serial No. 373.653. (No model) To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CALVIN H. NORRIS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Canton, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Tuyeres, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, refer ence being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification.
to My invention relates to an improvement in tuyeres; and it consists in certain features of construction and combination of parts, as will be hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claim.
[5 Figure 1 of the accompanying drawings is a perspective of a tuyere, illustrating my invention; Fig. 2, a side elevation; Fig. 3, a vertical section longitudinally through the center; Fig. 45, an end elevation; Figs. 5 and 6, perspectives of the grate and valves, and
Fig. '7 a perspective of metal lining.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all of the figures of the drawings.
A represents the bottom plate, which rests on the bottom or floor of the forge, the downwardly-projected bottomless box portion 13 projected through the bottom of the forge. The plate A is provided with a central per- 0 foration, O communicating with the box portion B. In one of the sides of the box portion 13 is provided two elongated apertures a, b in vertical order, the length of said apertures being the full width of the inside of the 5 box B. A grate E is provided to slide into the aperture a and a valve or closing slide F into the aperture Z). The shank portions of said grate and valve are pivotally secured to a handle portion G, by which the valve F, 40 which forms a bottom for the box B and the grate E, may be simultaneously drawn to allow the ashes that have fallen through the grate to fall from the box and to open the The handle portion G,
tuyere for cleaning.
being pivotally secured to the grate and valve, as shown at d, may be turned to one side under the side of the forge out of the way. At the side of the box portion B is provided a pipe portion H, extending into the box, into the outer end of which is placed the nose of the wind-pipe.
On the top of the plate A is placed a refractory tile J, having a centrally-located conical aperture K, the small end of said aperture placed about the aperture 0 of the plate A, the large end or portion of said aperture upward. A renewable metal lining L is provided, the lower or small end portion adapted to rest inside of the perforation O in the plate A, the upper portion to rest against the sides of the perforation K in the tile J.
The advantage of a tuyere constructed as hereinbefore described will be apparent to all persons familiar with the use of this class of tuyeres, because of the ease by which a clean fire may at all times be maintained and the convenient and inexpensive manner in renewing effected by the fire.
Having thus fully described the nature and object of my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In combination with the plate A, having a downwardly-projected open-bottom box portion B, having apertures a and b, of the grate E, valve F, handle G, a refractory tile having a conical aperture to correspond with an aperture in the plate A, and a renewable metal lining adapted to rest in the perforation O in the plate A and against the sides of the apertu re K in the tile J, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 2d day of December, A. D. 1890.
CALVIN H. NORRIS.
