Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
PETER LIPPERT, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
HANDLE FOR BOWLS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 459,933, dated September .22, 1891.
Application filed .T une 1 3, 18 91.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, PETER LIPPERT, of New York city, New York, have invented an Improved Handle for Bowls, of which the follow.- ing is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved detachable handle that facilitates the delivery of a ball on a bowling-alley.
It consists in the various features of improvement more fully pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of my improved handle, showing the jaws closed. Fig. 2 is a similar View with the jaws open; and Fig. 3, a cross-section on .line Fig. l.
The letters a o. represent a pair of handles pivotally connected by pivot b, passing through the inwardly-projecting lugs co2 of the handles. At the upper end both handles are curved downward, as shown, and the lower handle is provided with a nger-loop or eye c. At the lower end each handle terminates in a semi -cylindrical jaw d, provided with burrs d', as shown. A spring e, introduced between the handles, has a tendency to close the jaws against one another. In this closed position the jaws are inclined toward each other and can be readily introduced into the Serial No. 396,088. (No model.)
socket m of a bowl A. After being so introduced the handles a a are drawn together by the hand to separate the jaws and cause them to assume a parallel position. Thus the jaws will crowd against the wall of the socket and cause the bowl A to be firmly held to the handle. The player now aims and swings the bowl by means of the handle, and when ready to deliver he releases his pressure upon the handles. This will cause the spring e to force the jaws together and the latter will release the bowl and permit the "same to iy off the handle and along the alley.
My improved handle will be found very convenient, especially for ladies, as it permits a good aim to be taken, reduces the stoop, and gives an easy hold on the ball.
What I claim is- The combination of a pair of curved handles that are pivotally connected with the jaws d, in which the handles terminate, and that are provided with burrs d', substantially as specified.
