Description
UNi-TED STATES 1PA-TENT OFFICE,
J.. H. GHAMPLIN,l 0F ESSEX, CONNECTICUT.
AnynaovElyn:NT IN 'RAILROAD-CAR' BRAKES.'
Specification forming part of' Letters Patent o, 45,925, dated January 24, 1865.
To all whom it may concern,.- j
Be* it 'known that I, J. H. UHAMPLIN, of llssex,`in the county of Middlesex and Sta-te 'of Connecticut, .have invented a new and-'use- -ful Improvement inBrakes for Railroad-Cars;
.and I do herebyl declare the following -to be a full, clear, and, exact description of the same, when 'iwi panying drawings and theletters of reference marked thereon,an"d which said drawings eonstitujtefpart of this speciiication,.and represent, Aiii-l- 'y Figure1l,ian.'end View of n i'y brake7 and in Fig, 2 avertical central section of the same.' i Myinven'tion relates to that part of a railro'adfcar .brake employed to create friction upon'f the wheel, and it consists in the employment 'ot stone or other. mineral substance in thelconstruction of the friction-block. 'v'.,lsoinorefully'illustrate my invention, I will .proceed to fully describe the sa in connec-I tion with the accompanying drawings.
A represents acommon car-Wheel; B, theV beam ofthe brake, towhich thefriction-block is'nttached. C is ablock of stone or other suitable mineral substance capable of pro- -duci'ng great -frictionwhenapplied to the sur- :face ,of the vwheel. I set the said block in a ca'se'ior box, D, fixed to thebeam B. The lower end of the said box I niakeinelined upward,
as seen inFigfZ, to prevent block from tipping forwad,and set plate,'E, in the 1 saidbox back ofthe block 0,-the block resting thereon andprojectingalittle from the box. By constant use the block will be wornaway, then by means of 'the screws a a forceA the plate and block out a suicientdistauce for further use, and-s0 on' untiithe blersl;'isjnemly--l worn out. Y
My'brake may be operated to bear against i the wheel in any of the commonways.i That is no part of my invention.
The principal advantages of my invention over Ordinary frictioinbloclrs are, a greatly-increased friction from the saine yamount of power applied, and the adjustment of the block as it' wears away.
Having` therefore described my invention, what I'claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by LettersA Patent, is-f' A friction-block for'lrailroadcar brakes,
forined'frm stone or its equivalent, combined with and made adjustable by means ofthe screws a `ouin the case D, and arranged to operate substantially in lthe Vmanner and for the purpose speciled.-
5 J.'H; CHAMPL* Witn esses JOHN EARLE, -RUFUs SANFORD.
