P. H. ZAHRN. BARREL TRUCK.
No. 459,430. Patented Sept. 15, 1891.
Jim-g UNITED STATES PATENT QEE C FREDERICK H. ZAHRN, OF MICHIGAN CITY, INDIANA.
BARREL-TRUCKL SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 459,430, dated September 15, 1891.
Application filed June 12, 1891. Serial No. 396,032. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FREDERICK H. ZAHRN,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Michigan. City, in the county of La Porto and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Barrel-Roller, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in barrel-rollers.
The object of the present invention is to provide a truck adapted to move articles such as boxes, barrels, and the like, but more especially open barrels partially filled with liquids, without spilling the contents of the barrels.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a barrel-roller constructed in accordance with this invention, a barrel being in position. Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view, the barrel being removed.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, 1 designates a truck-frame constructed of wood or other suitable material and having curved arms 2, which form a curved recess adapted to receive and conform to the configuration of the sides of a barrel or cask and mounted upon rollers 3, arranged at the outer ends of the arms, and a caster 4, centrally arranged beneath the body of the frame. The truck is pushed or drawn by means of a handle 5, hinged to the central portion of the truckframe. The barrel is clamped by curved levers 6, which are fulcrumed on a hinged frame 7, which is similar in shape to the truck-frame and is connected therewith by link-plates 8. The inner ends of the levers are connected with a slide 9 by bars 10, which have their inner adjacent ends pivoted in a bifurcation of the slide 9, and their outer ends are provided with a series of adjusting perforations 11 to enable the curved levers to be adjusted to clamp large and small barrels and casks. The slide is arranged in a keeper 12 and is operated by a lever 13, which has its lower end fulcrumed on the frame 7 and its upper end shaped into a handle=and is pivoted intermediate its ends to a bar 14,
which engages the inner end of the slide and" forces the same inward and spreads theinner ends of the curved levers and closes the outer ends to clamp a barrel. The barrel may be further secured by a chain 15, having one end attach ed to the outer end of one of the curved levers, adapted to engage a projection 16 of the other curved lever. The barrel is clamped by the curved lever, and after being grasped the hinged frame is moved rearward to bring the sides of the barrel into engagement with the truck-frame by the handle, Which is connected with the hinged frame by chains 17. The handle consists of parallel bars 18, which are connected by a cross-bar 19 and a crossbar 20, that project beyond the bars .18 and have their ends shaped into handles. The bars 18 are provided with leaf-plates 21, having eyes Which are hinged to perforated ears 22 by a pintle 23.
It will be seen thatthe truck is adapted to readily grasp a barrel, cask, or package and is capable of conveying the same in a vertical position, and is especially adapted for carrying barrels partially filled with liquids.
That I claimis 1. In a barrel-roller, the combination of the truck-frame mounted upon rollers, the hinged frame, and the levers arranged on the hinged frame and adapted to clamp a barrel, substantially as described.
2. In a barrel-roller, the combination of the truck-frame provided with curved arms forming a curved recess and mounted on rollers, the hinged frame provided 'with curved arms similar to those of the truck-frame, the curved levers fulcrumed on'the hinged frame and adapted to clamp abarrel, and means for operating the levers and foldingthemin engagement with a barrel, substantially as described.
3. In a barrel-roller, the combination of the truck-frame provided with curved arms, the frame 7, provided with curved arms, the linkplates connecting the frames, and the curved levers fulcrumed on the frame7 and adapted to clamp a barrel, substantially as described.
4. In a barrel-roller, the combination of a truck-frame mounted on rollers, a frame 7, link-plates connecting the frames, curved levers fulcrumed on the frame and adapted to clamp a barrel, and the handles hinged to the truck-frame and connected with the frame '7, substantially as described.
5. In a barrel-roller, the combination of the 'frame 7, the curved levers fulcrumed on the 7. In a barrel-roller, the combination of the frame 7, the curved levers fulcrumed on the frame and adapted to clamp a barrel, the
slide 9, connected with the inner ends of the levers, theoperating-lever fulcruined on the frame, and the bar 14, pivoted to the operating-lever and engaging the slide, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto aflixed my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
FREDK. H. ZAHRN.
