Description

(No Model.) I
H. O. BARRETT. FOLDING 0R COLLAPSIBLB FEED BUCKET- No. 459,388. Patented Sept. 15, 1891.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HORATIO O. BARRETT, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
FOLDING OR COLLAPSIBLE FEED-BUCKET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 459,388, dated September 15, 1891. Application filed April 21, 1891. Serial No. 389,774. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HoRA'rIo O. BARRETT,
of Boston, in the county of Suffolk, State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding or Collapsible Feed-Buckets, of which the following is a description sufficiently full, clear, and exact to enable any person skilled in the art or science to which said invention appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a view representing my improved feed-bucket in position for use; Fig.2, a top plan view, enlarged, showing the bucket open; Fig. 3, a like view showing the bucket closed, and Fig. at an end elevation showing the bucket closed and folded.
Like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the different figures of the drawings.
My invention relates especially to a collapsible feed-bucket which is designed for use in feeding horses while in harness; and it consists in certain novel features hereinafter fully set forth and claimed, the object being to produce a simpler, cheaper, and more effective device of this character than is now in ordinary use. A
The nature and operation of the improvement will be readily understood by all conversant with such matters from the following explanation.
In the drawings, A represents the body of the bucket, which consists of a rectangular metallic frame comprising side bars 1), connected at their ends by hinged sectional end bars cl, the sections of each end being hinged together at f, and one of said sections being extended to overlap the companion section at g, forming a stop to prevent the bucket from being opened too far.
The bottom 0 is formed from two wooden plates hinged together at h. The bottom is connected with the frame by downwardlyconverging sidewalls i, constructed of canvas or similar flexible material.
The side bars I) are extended in parallelism, and are provided on their outer ends with hooks 70, which are adapted to take in eyes 1 on the hames m of a harness-collar D.
Near the front of the bucket, in each side bar I), a metallic rod 19 is pivoted by one end. The free ends of said rods are provided with eyes q, in each of which a cord 4' is secured, said cords being provided with books i, which are adapted to take in the rein-eyes o of the hames.
In the use of my improvement, the bucket being opened, the hooks k are insertedwin the eyes Z of the hames and the books If on the supporting-rods p inserted in like manner in the rein-loops o. This disposes the bucket directly under the mouth of the horse, permitting the animal to feed freely therefrom and avoiding the objections attending the use of ordinary feed-buckets which inclose the nose of the horse and are secured to his head. Moreover, great saving of grain is effected by the use of myimprovement, as the animal can readily reach the bottom of the bucket, which is held stationary by the fastenings described. When not in use the end bars d and bottom 0 are folded inward, the flexible nature of the wall material permitting this until the side bars 9 are brought approximately together, as shown in Fig. 3. The bottom may then be folded upward against the side, as shown in Fig. 4, reducing the bucket to a compact form for storing.
Having thus explained my invention, what I claim is A collapsible feed-bucket comprising rigid side bars connected by hinged end bars formed in sections hinged together, a sectional hinged bottom connected with said side and end bars by flexible Walls, and means for attaching said bucket to the hames of a harness-collar, substantially as specified.
