D. B. WEIGHTMAN. GUT-OFF BOX.
No. 458,768. Patented Sept. 1, 1891.
Ill
% Hum,
UNITED STATES DAVID B. 'WEIGHTMAN, OF GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN.
CUT-OFF BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 458,768, dated September 1, 1 89]l.
Serial No. 178,851. (No model.)
TO all whom it may concern:
Be it known thatI, DAVID B. WEIGHTMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cut-Off Boxes; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, referencebeinghad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a perspective showing front elevation. Fig. 2 is a sectional view on line a"- w of Fig. 5 with the slide 0 turned up. Fig. 3 is a similar view with the slide 0 turned down and in position as a cut-off. Fig. at is a view in perspective of the wire screen F. Fig. 5 is a plan view of same as Fig. 1.
Similar letters refer to similar par-ts throughout the several views.
My invention relates to improvements in cut-off boxes for spout-conductors; and it consists in providing the cut-0E box with screens so placed as to be self-clean sin gin connection with the cut-off device, as hereinafter explained.
I describe my invention as follows: The cut-01f box A is provided with the collars B and B to fit into the rain-water conductor. Within said box is the fine wire screen 0, and immediately above the latter is the coarse screen F, meeting the slide D when turned up and having at the bottom the plate G, calculated to retain any fine dirt which may be caught by the screen 0. The knees of the wires forming the screen F project slightly beyond the front line of the box, so that the cut-off slide D when turned up does not close the box, but leaves an opening E, (see Fig. 2,) Where leaves or other refuse tending to stop the passage of water will be forced out. Said screens are held in position by the rods H H, passing from the back of the box, where they are held by the nuts I I, to and through the screen 0, where they are bent upward, forming the supports K for the screen F. The cutoff slide D operates below the said screens and is fastened to the box by the sliding hinge J, and the sides L L of said slide are adapted to slip under the guards M upon the sides and back of the box when turned down to act as a cut-off, the slide resting at the back upon the lug N, so that it cannot be displaced by any heavy fall of water. It will be seen that the screens G and F are both removable, and thus may be easily cleansed at any time required.
Having thus described myinvention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-- 1. In a cut-off box, the removable fine wire screen 0, held in position above the cut-off slide D by the rods H H, passing through the back of said box, and there held by the nuts I I, and through the bottom of said screen,
terminating in the supports K K, as shown and described.
2. In a cut-off box, the removable coarse screen F, its knees projecting beyond the box and bearing on its face at the lower end the plate G and resting on the supports K K, as shown and described. Y
3. In a cut-off box, the combination of the fine wire screen 0 and the rods H H, held at the back by the nuts I I, said rods terminating in front in the supports K K, with the coarse screen F bearing the plate G, as shown and described.
4. In a cut-oh. box, the combination of the fine wire removable screen 0, the rods H H, supporting same, held at the back by the nuts I I and terminating in front in the supports K K, an cl the coarse screen F, its knees projecting beyond the box bearing the plate G, resting upon the supportsK K, with the cut-off D hung upon the sliding hinge J,thelug N, and the guards M, all substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
DAVID B. \VEIGHTMAN.
