L. FLEISCHMANN. CARPET STRBTGHER' AND PASTENBR.
Patented sept. 1, 1891'.

LEVIS FLEISCHMANN, OF DES MOINES, IOVA.
CARPET STRETCHER ND FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 458,682, dated September 1, 1891.
Application filed July l0, 1890. Serial No. 358,336. (No model.)
To a/ZZ'wh/om t may concern:
Be it known that I, LEwIs FLEISCHMANN, a citizen of Russia, residing at Des Moines, in the county of Polk and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Carpet Stretcher and Fastener, of which the following is a specification.
My obj ect is to provide a combined stretcher and fastener which shall be formed in sections adapted to be readily joined together and means by which the carpet may be removably secured to the marginal strips.
My object further is to provide means by which the marginal strips holding the carpetedges may be drawn toward the base-board to stretch the carpet and also secured to hold the same in place.
My invention consists in sectional marginal strips which are made of suitable material and so constructed as to form upper and base pieces held at intervals by connectingpieces adapted to contact against the wall, the upper piece extending downwardly relatively to the base-piece, which rests on the floor, forming a contracted opening, the carpetedge being grasped and held by means of removable grippers between said upper and base piece, the grippers being so constructed as to be held securely to the carpet by the wedgeshaped receptacle formed by the downwardlyextending piece and the basepiece. The sections are joined by means of an overlapping portion on one end of the one section, having rotatably fixed therein an extendingscrew entering a solid portion formed on the section to be joined, provided with a threaded bore adapted to receive the screw of the joined section, said screw being rotated by a thumbpiece thereon, the overlapping portion embracing the solid portion when in position and joined.
My invention consists, further, in plates adapted for attachment to the base-board, having fixed thereto a screw adapted to engage a section, and a nut on the screw to move the section, as required, to stretch and fasten a carpet fixed to the section.
My invention consists, further, in certain details of construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, in which- Figure 1. is a cross-section through one of the marginal sections, showing the gripper grasping and holdin ga section of carpet. Fig. 2 is a cross-section through the stretching device. FigQS is a detail perspective view of one of the grippers. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal sectional view of the ends of two sections, showing the joining device. Fig. 5 is a perspective View of a portion of a marginal section. Fig. 6 is a plan view showing the arrangement of my device relative to the floor and walls of a room.
A represents the marginal sections, which have respectively at each of their ends overlapping and embracing pieces B and solid extending portions C, the sections being joined by inserting the extending-screw c, which is rotatably fixed to the overlapping portion B within the screw-threaded bore l) in the solid portion C.
Referring to Fig. 5, the parts of the mar ginal sections are formed integrally and consist of a base-piece D'and an upper piece D2, held together by means of the supporting pieces D2. The upper piece D2, extending downwardly from that portion of the strip-sec tion adapted to contact against the wall to the outer portion, forms a wedge-shaped receptacle adapted to receive the grippers E, Fig. 3, which consist in a base-piece B2, having a spring e', and bearings for the upper piece c. The gripper is inserted, Fig. l, into and bed tween the pieces D and D2 between support ing-pieces D8, the carpet-edge A2 being inserted between its serrated faces, slo that when the carpet is drawn taut the gripper is held together by the wedge shape of the recepta cle between the pieces D D2. The tighter the carpet is drawn the firmer the hold of the grippers.
Referring to the means of stretching and fastening, (shown in Fig. 2,) H is a plate adapted for attachment to or ready detachment from the base-board by means of screws or other suitable device, to which is rotatably fixed the screw H2, having a thumb-piece H2, said screw and thumb-piece being held within a hollowed supplemental portion H4, formed withthe' marginal sections, so that when the plates are secured to the base-board and the edges of the carpets are within the grippers, the latter being in place, by rotating the screws H the marginal strips are drawn up snugly to the wall and the carpet stretched.
roo
at the same time, the marginal sections in this manner being held tothe wall and readily removable.
J, Fig. et, are spring-pieces holding the carpet down in the space between the joined sections. j
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a combined carpet stretcher and fastener, the combination of sectional marginal strips adapted to be joined, grippers held within the frame-Work of the marginal strips, and a device fixed on the marginal strips, adapted for attachment to the wall, consisting of a plate and screw, whereby the carpet may be stretched and held, as and for-the purposes set forth.
2. In a combined carpet stretcher and fast ener, sections of." marginal strips made up of a base-piece and an upper piece, the latter forming a wedge-shaped receptacle for a separable gripper, as and for the purposes set forth.
3. In a combined carpet stretcher and fastener, a supplemental portion formed With thc marginal sections, a plate adapted to be fixed to a wall and having` a screw projecting outward at right angles and through perforations in said supplemental portion, and a nut on said screw, arranged and combined to operate in the manner set forth.
4. The combination, in a carpet stretcher and fastener, of marginal strips, separable grippers adapted to seize and hold the edges ofthe carpet, said grippers in turn being held Within Wedge-shaped receptacles in the marginal strips, embracing portions, a screw, a solid portion having a screw-threaded bore adapted to receive said screw, a plate adapted for attachment to the Wall, a screw held by said plate, a nut on said screw, and a supplemental portion formed with the,n1a1ginal strips,`as and for the purposes described.
