Description

PATENTED MAR 24, 1908 lnvntor, v f Attorneys T. E. DAVIS.
CARPET STRETGHER. APPLICATION FI ED H2113. 1907.
Witnesses:
THOMAS ERRINGTQN DAVIS, OF CRYSTAL CITY, MANITOBA, CANADA.
CARPET-STRETCHER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed February 13, 1907.
Patented March 24, 1908.
Serial No. 357,158.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS ERRINGTON DAVIS, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Crystal City, county of Rock Lake, in the Province of Manitoba, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Carpet-Stretchers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to carpet stretchers; the object of my invention is to provide a carpet stretcher adapted to grip the carpet without injury to the fabric, and on which the operator may stand to hold the same against movement when the carpet is being stretched; a further object is to provide a readily extensible construction, bearing on one end a gripping member which is normally open, and to provide means for closing the gripping member to firmly hold the edge of the fabric; and, my invention consists of the construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as herein illustrated, described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this application, I have illustrated one form of embodiment of my invention, in which drawings similar reference characters designate corresponding parts, and in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section through the forward end of the device; and, Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse section through the forward end of the device.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a base member having a longitudinal slot 2 therein. A headed pin 3 is slidably disposed in the longitudinal slot 2 and secured to one end of a body member 4. Members 5 and 6 are connected together, and the member 5 connected to the member 4 by means of common forms of hinges 7, so that the device is readily extensible. The member 6 is provided with a shoulder 8, to which is hinged a jaw 9, as by means of the pin 10. The pivoted jaw 9 is provided with an outer offset upturned end 11.
A headed plunger 12 is disposed. through the jaw 9 and the member 6, a suitable opening 13 being provided in the member 6, so that the arc movement caused by the movement of the jaw 9 is permitted. Disposed around the plunger 12 within the opening 13 is a helical spring 14, the lower end of which bears against the jaw 9, and the upper end of which bears against a yoke 15, by means of which the jaw 9 is normally maintained in open position. Carried by the yoke 15 is a cross bar 16, through which the screwthreaded end of the plunger 12 is projected to receive a wing nut 17. By actuating the wing nut on the screw-threaded portion of the plunger 12, the tension of the spring 14 may be varied. By rotating the cross bar 16, it rides up on the inclined sides of the yoke 15 and closes the jaw 9.
' Carried by the under side of the member 6 is a fixed jaw 18, provided with a downturned end 19, adapted to cooperate With the upturned end 11 of the jaw 9, by means of which a firm grip is secured on the carpet or other fabric to be stretched.
In the operation of the invention, the members 1 and 4 may be extended with relation to each other by sliding the pin 3 in the slot 2. The members 5 and 6 may be extended from the position shown in. Fig. 1 by simply pressing them down, allowing movement on the hinges 7. Ordinarily, the operator stands on the member 1, which is adjacent the middle of the floor, and the headed pin or bolt 3 may be tightened to prevent movement of the member 4 with relation to the member 1'. The carpet is gripped by the members 9 and 18 when the device is in the position shown in Fig. 1, and the members 5 and 6 are moved downward to extend the gripping end of the device away from the base member 1.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a carpet stretcher, the combination comprising a plurality of members extensibly connected together, one of which members is provided with a shoulder, a jaw attached to saidshoulder means adapted normally to maintain the jaw open, means for closing the jaw, and a fixed jaw carried by said member having the shoulder.
2. In a carpet stretcher, the combination comprising a plurality of members extensibly connected together, a shoulder on one of said members a aw pivoted to said shoulder and provided with an offset upturned end, a jaw fixed on said member and provided with a down-turned end, and means for forcing the pivoted jaw towards the fixed jaw.
3. In a carpet stretcher, the combination a nut on the screw-threaded end of the plun- 10 comprising a plurality of members extensibly ger adapted to bear on the bar, and a spring connected, a jaw pivoted to one of said memdisposed around the plunger,
bers, a jaw fixed to the said member, a In witness whereofIhave hereunto set my headed plunger disposed through the jaws hand in the presence of two witnesses.
and provided with a screw-threaded end, a THOMAS ERRINGTON DAVIS. yoke disposed over the screw-threaded end Witnesses:
of the plunger, a bar disposed on the yoke DAVID POTTER,
over the screw-threaded end of the plunger, EZRA MCGHIE KERR.
