Description
(No Model.)
F. VAN PATTEN. HAME.
Patented Sept. l, 1891.
UNITED STATES PATENT (DEEICE.
FREDERICK VAN PATTEN, OF AUBURN, NEV YORK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 458,604, dated September 1, 1891.
Application filed September 6, 1890. Serial No. 364,121. (No model.)
' Auburn, in the county of Cayuga and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Haine, of which the followingis aspecitication. My invention relates to improvements in llames; and it consists, essentially, in constructing the hame with a flange, so that it will be substantially V-shaped in cross-section with one `side shorter than the other; and it also consists in certain other features, all of which will be hereinafter described, and then particnlarized in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of a hame embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is an enlarged cross-section on line 2 2, Fig. 1, showing also the collar. Fig. 3 is a modication. Fig. 4 is an enlarged cross-section on line 4 4, Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is another modification, and Fig. 6 is a cross-section thereof on line 6 6, Fig. 5. Fig. 7 is a detached enlarged section of the adjusting means at the top of the hame. Fig. 8 is a transverse section on the line S 8, Fig. 3.
1 represents the hame, and it is constructe 'substantially of V shape in cross-section, being provided with a wide portion 2 to lit against the collar, as usual, said portion being concave, and a narrow concave portion or flange 3, that fits against the convex front roll of the collar, said collar being shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2. This iiange 3 performs two functions-that of addingstrength whereby the hame can be made very light, and together with portion 2 for perfectly fitting and keeping the collar in shape. The hame may be made of cast or sheet steel or other metal, or any other suitable material. 4
In Fig. 1 I have shown the upper end 1l of the hanne as tubular and provided with a slot 4.
5 is a screw-bolt that 'screws into a screwthreaded collar G, provided with an eye 7, proj ectin g through the slot 4. Said eye 7 carries a loop to which the connecting-strap from the other hanne is connected. The collar and its eye are adjusted up and down by the turning of a knob or bulb S at the upper end of the hame for operating the screw-bolt 5, said knob having in its under side a recess to provide a perfect llt for the upper end of the tubular portion 1a of the hame. `The bolt 5, just belargement is provided with a circumferential groove 10, that receives a screw or pin 11, projecting inwardly from the tubular portion, the object being to permit the turning of the bolt and to permit removal thereof by the removal of the screw or pin. This construction permits of the accol'nmodation of the haines to different-sized collars.
l2 is the loop for one of the reins, and which is made integral with the collar 6.
The draw-eye 13 is received in a recess 14 in a ring-holder 15 and rests against the upper surface of the hame 1. The ring-hold 15 engages under the iiange 3, by which it is held more securely than otherwise.
In Figs. 3 and 4 the tubular portion of the hame has a finishing-knob 16 secured to its upper end. In this form I provide a setscrew 17, that passes through the slot 4 and engages a screw-threaded perforation in a block 18, through which it passes, so that when screwed inwardly the parts will bind by reason of the engagement of the end of the screw with the tubular portion 1a and the consequent pressure brought to bear on block 1S. This set-screw passes through a perforation 19 in the collar 20, that slides on the tubular port-ion, said collar being provided with loop 21 for the connecting-strap of the haines.
In Figs. 5 and 6 a similar collar and loop to that shown in Figs. 3 and 4 is employed; but instead of making the upper end of the hame tubular it is made triangular in cross-.section to receive atelescopic piece 22, that is adjustable in height by means of a set-screw 23.
24 is a loop at the upper end of the telescopic piece to receive the connecting-strap of the haines.
1. In a haine having a hollow slotted portion, the combination of an adjustable collar projecting through the slot, a vertical screwbolt engaging said collar andarranged within the hollow port-ion of the hame, anda knob or bulb at the upper end of the bolt snugly fitting and closing the upper end of said. hollow portion7 swiveled to the upper end of the hame, and serving as a handle for the bolt, substantially as set forth.
low the knob, is enlarged at 9, and this enl IOO 2. n ahame havngahollow slotted portion, In testimony that I claim the foregoing as the combination of an adjustable collar promy own I have hereto affixed my signature in jeoting through the s1ot,a Vertical screwbolt presence of two Witnesses.
provided with a circumferential groove, a pin FREDERICK VAN PATTEN., 5 projecting into the groove, and the knob at VVitnesses.v I
the upper end of the bolt for turning the GEO. WV. BENHAM,
same, substantially as set forth. B. M. VILCOX,
