SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 458,590, dated September 1, 1891.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HENRY W. MATTHIES, of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hat and Coat Hooks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.

Myinvention relates to bat and coat hooks, and has for its object to provide the same with means for readily supplying to the owner of the hat or coat hung thereon a check corresponding with a number fixed to the hook to distinguish it. 7

It consists in the combination, substantially as is hereinafter described and claimed, of a hat and coat hook having a check receptacle formed in the body thereof integrally therewith to containfa series of check-tickets, each bearing a number or character corresponding with that designating the hook, whereby the owner of the hat or coat may be quickly and readily f urni'shed with a check wherewith to identify his articles when he returns for them.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation, and Fig. 2 aside elevation, partly in section, of my improved check, hat, and coat hook.

The hat and coat hook A (shown in Figs. 1 and 2) may be of any approved shape or form adapted for the support of a hat and coat or other article of wearing-apparel and personal use. Upon the front of the body of such a hat and coat hook A, I form a check receptacle or case B, of suitable size and form, said receptacle'being preferably made integral with the body of the hook, as shown in the section thereof, Fig. 2. Within this receptacle is fitted a loose plate or follower C, of a size to fit loosely yet accurately therein parallel with the bottom thereof, with freedom to play back and forth therein from front to rear. This plate 0 is carried automatically to the front by means of one or more spiral springs D, interposed between it and the bottom of the case in such manner as to cause it to maintain its parallelism with the bottom of the case. Itis confined therein by means of an overhanging or inwardly-projecting rim E, formed on the front edge of the case. This rim E is omitted from a portion of the edge, either at one end of the case, as shown in Fig. 1, or at the top or bottom thereof, to permit of the insertion not only of the follower C, but also of a series of checks W V, which may be of card-boarder metal, and which are preferably made to correspond substantially in dimensions with the follower.

The follower O is marked with a distinctive character or number to designate and distinguish the particular hook to which it is attached, and each check W is made to bear a duplicate thereof, so that each check carried to the front, as well as the follower itself, when the checks have all been withdrawn, will serve to identify the hook.

The action of the springs D upon the follower 0 operates to keep the front check in the series in position to be readily slipped out from the case. hen this is done, the next check in order will present to view in the case its distinguishing number corresponding with that of the check removed therefrom and delivered to the person whose hat or coat has been placed on the hook. By using checks made of card-board they need not be replaced when returned, so that the checking of hats, coats, and other articles in public places is greatly facilitated by means of my invention.

By means of my invention. amost effective checking device is afforded at a very low cost for the proper care of hats, coats, &c.,in all public places, the multiple checks being always in readiness so long as any remain in the receptacle, both to identify the hook and the party entitled by virtue of having received the last check delivered therefrom to receive the article placedin the hook.
