J. M. WILLIAMSON. vTYPE AND HOLDER FOR THE SAME.
No. 456,873. Patented July 28, 1-891.
UNITED STATES JAMES MAYNARD WILLIAMSON, OF
PATENT OFFICE.
NEWV BRIGHTON, PENNSYLVANIA.
TYPE AND HOLDER FOR THE SAME.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 456,873, dated July 28, 1891.
. Application filed February 11. 1391. Serial No. 381,065. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JAMES MAYNARD WIL- LIAMSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Brighton, in the county of Beaver and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Type and Holder for Same; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improved type and holder for the same, for stamping boxes, packages, and other articles; and it consists in two pieces hinged together side by side and separated from each other, and having circular beads formed on the lower edge of each adapted to engage with type having an upward projection and curved recesses, as will be fully set forth hereinafter.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a side elevation of my improved holder and type, a part of the former being broken away and showing several type in position. Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a plan viers of one of the hinges and springs.
To put my invention into practice I pr0- vide two pieces 1, of a suitable length, and secure the same together by means of hinges 2, in a manner that will hold the same separated. Arranged in connection with these hinges 2 are suitable springs 3, which tend to hold the top edges of the pieces 1 separated and the bottom together. Formed along the lower edge of each piece 1, and projecting inwardly, are beads 4, which are adapted to engage with large type 5 of a peculiar form. These type consist of an oblong block 5,11aving the type proper carved on the under side, and an upward extension 6, having semicircular recesses 7, formed on opposite sides of the same, which engage with the heads 4, above described.
In operation, the upper edges of the pieces 1 are pressed together, which separates the beads 4c, and the type 5, being first placed in line with one another, may be readily entered into the holders, the peculiar construction of which centers and holds the type in perfect alignment.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- 1. In a type-holder, the two holding-plates provided with the iuwardly-projectiug beads on theirlower opposing edges, aud the pivoted bails or loops connecting the plates together, substantially as described.
2. In a type-holder, the two oblong holdingplates having the inwardly-projecting beads on their lower opposing edges, the bails or loops fastened to the plates and pivotally secured together between the plates, and the spring adapted to separate the upper edges of the plates, substantially as described.
3. In a type-holder, the combination of hold ing-plates having the beads on their lower opposing edges, the pivoted bails or loops connecting the plates and provided with separating-springs, and the type-block having the extension provided with seats, substantially as described.
4.. In a type-holder, the oblong holdingplates having the inwardly-projecting beads on their lower opposing edges, thebails or loops fastened to the plates and pivotally secured together between the plates, the spring on the pivot having the upwardly-extending arm adapted to press the upper edges of the plates apart, and the type-block provided with the extension on its upper side, and seats in said extension adapted to receive the beads on the plates, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I hereunto aiiix my signature this 29th day of October, A. I). 1890.
JAMES MAYNARD WILLIAMSON.
