TOBACCO PIPE ATTACHMENT. No. 456,856. Patented July 28,1891,
Ezlg.i.
l 5 a /l UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK J. SOHMEHR, OF UTICA, NEBRASKA.
TOBACCO-PIPE ATTACHMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 456,856, dated July 28, 1891.
Application filed January 19, 1891. Serial No. 378,309. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FRANK J. SCHMEHR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Utica, in the county of Seward and State of Nebraska, have invented a new and useful Tobacco-Pipe Attachment, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is an improvement in tobacco-pipe attachments, and has for its objects to provide a pipe with a false bottom or perforated diaphragm; to provide means whereby the same may be withdrawn from the pipebowl without soiling ones fingers, and, furthermore, to provide aremovable bottom which may be securely applied to any pipe having a wooden or other-bowl, which will be simple, neat, and cheap.
ith these objects in view the invention resides in the various novel details of construction and in the combination of parts hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings, in which I have illustrated my invention and in which like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts, Figure 1 is a sectional view of a pipe provided with my attachment. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same; Fig. 3, a perspective view of my attachment separate from the pipe, showing the said attachment in detail.
In the drawings, the letter A designates a pipe-bowl, and B the attachment thereto. The pipe attachment B consists of a circular top or rim portion 1), which is adapted to fit upon the upper edge a of the bowl A, and may be provided with a hinged lid.
1/ indicates a false bottom or perforated metal diaphragm, and is connected to the rim 1) by the arms b which "may be integral with the bottom b.
b indicates two curved key-hole slots in the rim 1), which are adapted to receive the headed pins b, which are driven into the upper edge a of the pipe-bowl A.
The attachment B is secured Within the bowl A by means of the headed pins 7) and key-hole slot-s b I make the arms 11 of such a length that there will be a space a left between the bottom of the bowl andthe perforated diaphragm or bottom I), and this is done in order that the tobacco in the pipe may be preserved from being fouled by the liquids which naturally collect in the pipe-stem and descend to the lower part of the bowl. The perforated diaphragm also prevents small particles of the tobacco from being drawn into the stem andpreserves the bowl by keeping the hot coal within it from direct contact with the bottom; but the prime object and aim of my invention is to provide a removable perforated diaphragm which may be securely attached to any wooden-pipe bowl, and which may be easily removed therefrom without soiling ones fingers, as before stated. It will be seen that the device shown in the drawings and described above answers the purpose.
To clean the bowl A, it is only necessary to turn the attachment B, so that the larger portions of the slots b will embrace the headed pins 19 when the attachment 13 maybe lifted out of the bowl, and the pipe cleaned.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The herein-described pipe, the same consisting of the bowl, the upper edge of which is provided with the headed pins, the circular rim fitting the upper edge of the bowl and provided at intervals corresponding with the pins with curved key-hole slots adapted to receive and interlock with said pins, the sup porting-arms depending from the rim, and the perforated bottom supported within the bowl by the arms, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FRANK J. SCHMEHR.
