G. S. SEARLE.
' PIPE VISE. No. 455,414. Patented July 7', 1891..
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE S. SEARLE, OF SALEM, MASSACHUSETTS.
PIPE-VISE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent Ida-455,414, dated July '7, 1891. Application filed March 12, 1891. Serial No. 384,800- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE S. SEARLE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Salem, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Pi pe-Vises, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in pipe-Vises, and it is carried out as follows, reference being had to theaccompanying drawin gs,l wh erein- 1 Figure 1 represents a front elevation, and Fig. 2 represents a central longitudinal section, of the invention.
Similar letters refer to similar parts wher- 7 ever they occur on.the different parts of the drawing i The improved pipe-vise consists of a plate or frame A in one piece, with which is cast two projections B and O, the former having a screw-threaded perforation for the reception of the adjusting-screw D, by which the movable jaw is adjusted, and the latter constituting the stationary jaw, as is common in devices of this kind.
E is the movable jaw, which is loosely connected in a suitable manner to the lower end of the adjusting-screw D, as shown in the drawings, so as to cause said j aw to .follow the longitudinal adjustment of the screw D.
In the face of the stationary jaw C, I make a pair of parallel dovetailed grooves C C, in
which are inserted the dovetailed holding or clamping bars 0 c, which are preferably made of hardened steel and secured in the dovetailed grooves, as shown in the drawings.
E E are similar and paralleldovetailed grooves in the face of the movable jaw E, in which are inserted corresponding dovetailed ner edges of the said holding-bars should become worn, defaced, or broken, they may easily be removed and reversed in posltion,
thus utilizing both edges of each of said bars,
by which the life and durability of the vise is materially increased. WVhen both edges of any bar are broken, blunted, or worn, such bar may easily be removed and replaced by another one at a very small' expense. By this arrangement and construction I am able to produce a pipevise composedof very few parts, and having movable and'adjustable holding-bars on the stationary andmovable jaws, which bars are readily secured to, adj usted on, and removed from said jaws, as oocasion may require.
Havingthus fully described the nature, construction, and operation of my invention, I wish to secure by Letters Patent, and claim The herein-described pipe-vise, consisting of a frame A, having a stationary jaw C and movable jaw E, and a screw-D for adjusting the latter, said jaws having dovetailed parallel grooves O O E E, and reversible and removable dovetailed holding-bars c c e e inserted in the said grooves, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to thisspecification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses, on this 9th day of February, A. D. 1891.
GEORGE S. SEARLE.
